Cowan is a good player, and I don't hate acquiring him value wise as a return for Andersson, but we just straight up do not need more LHS wingers in the organization. Is there anyone reasonable that we could then move him in another trade for?

Does Rasmus get the 2 1st equivalent? Cowan +28 1st would be a fairly sizable return for a rental.

Conversely, the idea of a 28 1st being valuable to us seems pretty harsh. Sure, it could be, but as someone who wants to see a hard crash and steep track back I would hope that by 28 we are looking at the next phase instead of trying to continue drafting high and strong. But, it could be very useful as a trade chip or just a way to keep the build going.

My preference would be sending Andersson to the Leafs in exchange for that 2028 pick as part of the package. I still think that's going to be a high pick, and the 2029 pick may be even higher if conditions end up pushing it to 2029.

There's just so many other teams with interest that can offer better.
F Brad imo.

You can critique the view of the core. You can critique the additions he made.
But not much point in arguing that he was trying to move the team out of the mushy middle despite the fact that many fans see it as the goal of the franchise to stay there.

agreed although the initial quote that started all of this latest round IIRC implied a willingness (your belief in this may vary) on RA to extend with Toronto
I think Toronto only makes sense (for either side) as a trade partner if there was an extension- then you can start asking for the few TO goodies worth looking into
I'm not saying I see it happening...

It really depends on where you think that ends up. I think there is a high chance that we are about to see the Leafs implode, so I think there is a chance it turns into a top 5 pick.
However, if you don't see the Leafs on the ledge right now, then absolutely you are 100% right and most teams would have better offers.

Biggest concern with a Leafs deal to me is the 101 conditions Treliving will put on it. If its cut and dried, then alright.

Bring on the conditions. They always seem to end poorly

There's light rumblings out there that Quinton Byfield/LA aren't in love with each other.
The problem is that LA doesn't need our vets. And they need centres.

I've been high on Byfield for a long time, but I'm even starting to lose faith. The physical attributes are all there, but I wonder if he just lacks the hockey sense.
Not sure how much I would pay for him.

I can't imagine a scenario that LA would offload him with Kopitar retiring next season...
I also can't see a scenario where we have what LA wants.
But I would love for him to be a Flame.

Oh believe me I understand, I was one of his biggest defenders when he was here. Just seemed like he was second place in every trade that happened in the NHL.
I don’t envy the position he’s in right now, with a competitive window and no assets to improve the team.

Yeah, Byfield seems to be Pierre Luc Dubois minus the belligerence. Perhaps it's just a change of scenery needed.

I think a crash is coming hard for the Leafs, with or without Ras. Having a potential top 10 pick in 2028 even if the Flames are starting to build back up would be a hell of an asset. It'd be a gamble, but one worth taking that would have the chance to meaningfully add to or extend their competitive window.

I think some Treliving memes are somewhat over the top.
It's a good thing to be in on every trade discussion.
And he had his share of blockbuster trades as well.

I would be very interested in Byfeild if he becomes available.
Lots of potential still there and is already a 55 point 2C as a 23 year old (has been transitioned back into his natural position this year).
If the price isn't Ludacris, you push. Could very end up being a top line player or fantastic 2nd line scoring C.

I don't view it as an intentional strategy to stay mushy middle. I think it's an organizational strategic shortcoming, perhaps as a result of an ownership mandate, that more often than not leads them directly to the middle of the pack.
Failing to move assets when they're diminishing, over and over again, and moving too many draft picks (too early in the competitive window) are common traits of Flames management over the years.
