Well the incentive would be to get Knies for “parts”
Using your $50 analogy - you can give $10 change and still come out ahead

Flames can insist on that player all they want but it’s either intentionally unrealistic, I.e they will not deal with the Leafs based on a crazy trade ask, or they’re talking bigger deal.
Or, more likely, it’s someone using the media to advantage their position.

I think people are seriously undervaluing Easton Cowan. He’s no Matthew Knies, but he would be a nice acquisition.

I just think other teams can do better than Cowan + a first in 2028, unless the first is unprotected

Yup.
For me, the Knies talk is just to say: the price is high, call us when you're serious. And serious means 1st + Cowan +

Why would they be talking a bigger deal if that’s the price just for Andersson?
Toronto is either going to have to pony up, create a “parts” deal with that kind of value (they can’t), or let Andersson go to a competitor who actually has something to offer.
Again, zero reason for Calgary to add.

100%
Then pursue a '27 first in a Kadri trade, and they'll have 2 1sts for 5 consecutive drafts. That's how you build a talent pool

If they like the player enough? Sure they’d add.
Knies isn’t the price for just Andersson. It’s not a realistic one anyway. The Flames can bluff their hand, but it’s just not a good faith negotiation if that’s the price they’d hold on.
The value equivalence isn’t there, even if you factor in blocking your rival from acquiring a player you covet.
The Leafs with Andersson and minus Knies doesn’t make them a better team, one for one. Which is why I say: if the Flames want Knies and it stops there, they’d need to add. If they don’t want to add then there’s not a deal to be made.

Oh well, guess the Leafs aren’t getting Andersson.
On to better offers!

This seems a bit out of touch if that is the Flames ask. Despite what Flames fans emotions, or those in the organization, might be towards Treliving holding grudges isn’t the best way to do business.
If, in fact, the ask from the Flames for Andersson is Knies, if I were the Leafs, I’d be asking for Gridin or Coronato as the add from the Flames. In other words, there’s no deal here to be made. If the Leafs want Anderson, their best chance is likely to come in the offseason as a UFA, if he gets there.
Bear in mind, there were rumors last year that the Leafs were prioritizing Knoes over Marner. That should indicate the likelihood of Knies being involved in any trade. Extremely unlikely and certainly not for Andersson.

So the Flames should just make another bad trade with Toronto just because they want Andersson and don't want to give up ..... Wait, they can't give up a competitive offer outside of Knies because they blew their load already.
There's no deal with Toronto, even without the rumored Brad tax.

Well you ask for Knies for two reasons in a trade with the Leafs
1) Brad Treliving is Garth Snow levels of bad as a GM. There is a chance he agrees to trade Knies; and
2) the Leafs have almost nothing else of value on their roster

CJ’s trade board on the Athletic has Andersson at 1, Coleman at 4, and Kadri at 12

I’ve always been off the opinion that Kadri wouldn’t be dealt until the offseason when he can have time to move his family. The other two I definitely see getting dealt before or at the TDL. It’s not often you get two top 5 trading targets.

This is probably the deal right here. Toronto keeps coming up, Ras seems to be headed to UFA save for a few select teams and, this is IMO obviously, despite having a great season thus far I wonder if we and even the media are overvaluing him somewhat.
At the deadline he probably gets you those picks, but I'm not sure he gets you any team's A prospects. Therefore, this would be the deal to take.

Try and take big swings in FA or a trade now and then to be good but never commit to a full restock and rebuild. That's the downside of the retool vs what most consider a true rebuild. I imagine almost losing the team once scarred them forever which is too bad because operating from a position of fear of failure dooms any endeavour.

One of the biggest criticisms of Brad Treliving was that he moved too many picks.
A team being run to stay in the middle doesn't expend draft capital to improve a team currently in the middle.
Plus they won a division twice, which isn't the middle.
I think you can average in the middle, and most teams do, but the 20 year mushy middle thing is one of the most lazy arguments I've seen.

Ya, and then he'll tell everyone that he wasn't the one getting married but he could have been. It was his choice
