So a decade of Hughes locked up. And we end up with a top 4 pick this season.
Cost is 1st (vgk) + Parehk + Gridin + Frost.
Do you do it?

My thoughts on doing the deal aside, I bet when we look back, that proposed package would have been better than whatever Vancouver gets.

And depending on his list, the Kadri deal is very hard to put together. You need a team that (a) needs a 2C, (b) is a contender (or thinks they could be) and therefore wants that extra push with an older player, (c) can afford his salary even with retention, (d) isn’t on his NTC list and (e) has assets to pay for him.
If he’s clever he can make himself almost untradeable by working his list. However, the parity this year throws a wrench into that - lots of teams are still in it.

I must have missed that they said they would like to play together. As far as I’m aware, Jim Rutherford has been the only one to formally say that the brothers would like to play together at some point (paraphrasing).
I think Quinn has also acknowledged it ‘would be nice’ when pressed or something to that effect but largely brushed it off. At least that’s What I remember. Acknowledging I certainly don’t catch everything, so I may have missed an item or two along the way.
It is interesting though, Ruthford may have been prepping the market for a Hughes departure that to a large extent has been out of the hands of the Canucks.

Which is why I'd like the Flames to be aggressive and proactive in getting the process started.
To your point, the return may not necessarily be what everyone thinks it could be but should still be meaningful. A player of Kadri's age is not going to increase in value and no sense in taking the risk of him devaluing, which will happen at some point with 100% certainty.
I don't necessarily agree that he can make himself untradeable. Not unless the Flames grant him greater control to which he is contractually obligated.

Nemec, Mercer, and say 2x 1st would be a good deal for both teams I think as Nemec is starting to look decent.

You don’t agree? You don’t think you could create a 13 team NT list that would make it extremely hard to trade Kadri by listing all the teams that would be interested and leaving out anyone that wouldn’t? I suspect there’s only about 6 or so that would really want him. If he puts all of them on the list, he has full control.

I do think that acquiring and extending Hughes is the only plausible shortcut out there but it's not that plausible LOL

That sounds bananas. Nemec is worth a ton. They certainly add. But more like Nemec, 1st, and a player. But not Mercer and another first in my opinion.
They aren’t in a position to really win this trade… they’ll get a haul, but it won’t make up for the loss of Hughes.

If acquiring Hughes is a 'shortcut', why are the Nucks terrible? He's an elite player, but there are no shortcuts.
Parekh + Gridin + Frost +1st would be a terrible deal, and would set the rebuild back by 2 years.
It would however, elevate the Flames to being a potential playoff team for the next couple years, until Kadri and Coleman are gone or faded.

I agree, Nemec and Mercer would be more than enough.
If the Canucks want viable players back who can play today, they won't get better than that.
Although I believe they should truly rebuild and try and get more futures.

I wouldn't give up that if I were NJD. I would just wait and sign him as a free agent.
Nemec+Mercer would be my offer from NJD.

The Flames are on their dads trip, it is very unlikely anything happens until 2026.

Is it for sure that he wouldn’t sign in other markets? Risky for the Devils to assume they will just be able to sign Quinn in a couple of years.
Do the Devils want to wait or get the second best D in the league for this year and get him on a cheap deal next year before having to extend him for $13M or more per season?
Very interesting to see what happens

You've got to think Markstrom and Allen's age are weighing on Fitzgerald to make a move now rather than waiting two more seasons.
He's sitting on a couple of ticking time bombs and knows what it's like to try and contend without at least average goaltending.

Quinn Hughes just turned 26 and is nearly a point per game Dman over his career. He is second to Makar as the best Dman in the NHL. While he is rumored to want to play with his brothers he does not have trade protection and has a year and a half left on his deal that is a complete steal under today’s cap. This is a franchise player being dealt.
