Maybe but I would think McDavid would want to avoid egg on his face for taking a massive discount to contend for the cup and miss the playoffs entirely. Missing the playoffs would be such a disaster for that team that I just can't see them giving up. They just may not be good enough.

I do believe that this has been well-established.

I'm usually wrong but I can't help but think he might go to a team like San Jose where the young talent they currently have will be starting to hit their stride by then. Also Ontario vs California could be a factor.

The great defensive force that is Mavi has the lowest +/- of any player in the top 20 scorers of the league. How he can be labelled as the best player in the league is truly bananas.
I assume that it is entirely Skinner's fault. What a joke.

Skinner will hop teams and become a legitimate starter again, mark my words. It's happened time after time. Dubnyk is the prime example of that.

Without a doubt. He routinely gets entirely sold out by his team in front of him. If he gets to play with a team that incorporates any kind of defensive responsibility he will be at the very least a serviceable goaltender.

Hard to play your best when you're the decacto scapegoat for all of your teams problems. You have to have some thick hide especially with the media scrutiny and their audacity say things out of line because of the toxic level of pride in that team.
And it goes as far as your family enduring harassment from fans.
Do they actually wonder why they create Dubnyks and Talbots, and nobody they bring in is ever able to play the role of bailing out a team that doesnt believe in team defense?
Yeah bring in the Ingrams and Binningtons. They'll be different.

They better hope McDavid figures it out. If he keeps up his play some models have them finishing 25-28th in the league. He seems to be playing tired. He is getting the same shooting%, but not taking the same amount of shots, high danger or otherwise.
Comparing 5v5 his first 27 games this season vs. his other first 27:
Points/GP: 0.56 (lowest in career)
Goals/GP: 0.22 (tied lowest - 2017)
Shots/GP: 1.67 (2nd lowest - 2015 rookie year)
Sh%: 13.3% (13.69% career avg.)
xGoalDif 5v5 his first 27 games in a season:
2023: +10.38
2024: +9.42
2025: +0.64 (career low for first 27 games)
5v5 High Danger xG:
2023: 2.103
2024: 3.354
2025: 1.252
For the first 27 games this year he is playing more 5v5 minutes (~18/game), 5v5 scoring is at a career low, 5v5 shot volume near career lows, and high danger chances and finishes lowest since 2018. Although they had a similar starts the two previous season that was often due to "bad PDO" on top of dominant play. That domination doesn't exist this year, they are just No Good.

Everyone says that McDavid took that low years low dollar contract two year deal to benefit the Oilers, and sure it does help them a bit, but with an older team that is going to fail down without a rebuild does he want to stick around?
The answer is now, lets say that at the end of the year the Oilers fail dramatically, he now hates his best buddy Leon, and wants to punch Bouchard and Skinner in the face, while slapping Knobby across the face. He storms into the Oilers office and says trade me right now.
First of all, for the "best player in the league" which I don't think is true, he's on a dollar bargin deal at 12.5. Any team on the cusp of a cup will look at that and the two year contract, and the ability to all eggs in one basket run will love that deal, and it will increase the possibility of a bidding war for the Oilers.
This was McJesus and his agent insuring that he's tradable. IF he had signed a 18 million dollar long term deal, not so much.
Fail Oilers Fail.

We passed on Lane in 2022 and then Cole in 2024. Think Basha will be a good player, but Cole is on a similar trajectory to Lane (he just doesn't have Celebrini to pad his D+2 stats).

Edmonton will not make the playoffs. They let depth get away from them over the last two off seasons.
McDavid is about to celebrate his last Christmas as an Oiler. He'll be traded in the off season and Edmonton will compete with us for the Dupont sweepstakes.

It would give me great pleasure if, for the second year in a row, the Flames won an extra-time, come-from-behind game in their season opener against a rival that, ultimately, led to that rival missing the playoffs.

I'm glad the Flames didn't draft Cole Hutson. Just like Zegras ever since I saw him act like a complete ######bag at the World Juniors I don't want him anywhere near the Flames.

Even on HFOilers they are starting to admit that Mackinnon is the best player in the NHL.
