I feel proud that basically the only song of theirs I know is Radioactive. And that was enough for me to consider a Van Gogh if I ever heard them again.

They only had one studio album, and it was less than 40 minutes. I quite like the album. But really, the Sex Pistols were more icons than musicians.

I don't even think Johnny Rotten likes the Sex Pistols.

I don't think anyone in the band did. They had one 40 minute album, and they had to make personal changes part-way through it.
I also just found out, they are doing a reunion tour....without Johnny Rotten:

They were a huge influence because they were one of the first with the punk attitude and style. As a band they were ok. Steve Jones would even say thats generous.

The Fall would be in contention if any of you were listening to anything but CJ92. Fugazi as well.

whether you like or dislike the Sex Pistols you cannot argue that they should or could be left off a list of best rock bands that includes No Doubt Def Leopard Oasis and GnR, they are monumentally more important than any of them and I would argue neither Oasis or GnR would exist without them, ditto Joy Division and NIN and Radiohead or a list without the Byrds that includes the Eagles, utterly asinine

It’s weird that these days there are so few BANDS. It’s mostly a single named performer (ie Taylor Swift or Ed Sheeran or The Weeknd) or a group of singers but not a group of musicians. Discuss.

Rock is theatrical, so any band in consideration would need to have that ONE legendary performance, the one that most people, not just fans, would recognize as exceptional. Recording a great track in a studio is one thing. Blowing peoples minds in concert is quite another.
So maybe don't just name the band, link the video.

I remember seeing Soundgarden with The Reverend Horton Heat back in the day. Most people would probably consider Soundgarden to be the better band when it comes to records and would be on way more people's lists, but damned if The Reverend Horton Heat wasn't the better live show. If I had to take someone to a concert who didn't know either band and just wanted them to have fun, I know which one I would take them to.

Haha I was at that same show. 94-95 at Max Bell? The two things that stood out were how much weed was in the air and how friggin loud it was. I've been to a lot of concerts and a lot of loud ones but that one was up there for volume. After Soundgarden started I thought my eardrums were gonna blow. Pretty good show, though, so glad I got to see them when I did.

There are way more bands now than there has ever been by orders of magnitude. The music industry has shifted dramatically from major labels, Top 40 and FM rock radio.
Approximately 120,000 new tracks are released on music streaming services every day.
AI Overview:
It is impossible to know the exact number of rock bands in the world today versus 1976, but the number has likely increased significantly due to easier music creation and distribution. While 1976 saw a peak in mainstream rock dominance, today's music landscape is far more diverse, with a vast and uncountable number of rock bands across various subgenres and levels of popularity, thriving through online platforms rather than solely relying on radio and major labels.
