Or it could be that Richmond is just a dump.

Isnt Richmond like 90% Yop-Gobbling, cycling white people?

Yes...that would be a bad racist joke.

Absolutely not. West Richmond is almost entirely East Asian and has been since the late 1990s after China took over Hong Kong - the ####ty racist joke there was always that the mainland Chinese immigrants all ended up there because the name of the city sounds like "rich man", when in fact I suspect it's because it's closest to YVR.

East Richmond is mostly south Asian and again, that has been the case for over two decades.

Overall, Richmond has the highest Asian population by proportion of the total in Canada. It's like 75%. And the white people who live there are generally not the yop gobblers, but the descendants of all the farming families that have been there since like 1900.

My sister lives in Richmond and I think it’s a dump. Some great dim sum though.

Hey look! People are talking about where I live!

Richmond is, at the very least, a very interesting city. Having grown up in Victoria, living in Richmond the past eight years has been a wildly different experience. But it's definitely not a dump.

The multicultural nature of Richmond is fascinating. There's pretty much no other place like it in Canada. 19% white (including significant Russian and Ukrainian populations), over 50% Chinese, ~10% Filipino, ~10% South Asian, and still a vibrant Japanese-Canadian community (mostly in Steveston where I am) whose families have been here for over 100 years. My daughters are friends with a number of kids whose ancestors came here from Japan well over 100 years ago to work in the fishing industry and were later interned.

I actually really like it, for whatever it's worth.

I used to date a girl whose family lived in Steveston (probably still does). Absolutely loved going out that way any chance we got. Definitely have thought about retiring out in that area one day if I can (Steveston, White Rock, etc.).

The country's sure doing well, lets keep going at the rate we're going.
I absolutely hate politics, brings out the worst in people... the reality is this country is cooked, how do you propose we save it?

The country isn't cooked, we can start there. Catastrophising the state of our society is just lazy.

The state of politics is certainly distasteful, I'll give you that. It's become some perverted version of team sports that is blocking any real progress. Although it's really only bringing out the worst in people that were already the worst people.

There's not a lot of 'saving' that really needs to be proposed. I would suggest continuing to advocate and vote for the persons best representing the good for not only yourself, but the most disadvantaged.

It's only a complicated choice if you choose it to be that way.

I have never understood sentiments like this. We live in, objectively, one of the best countries in the world. The problems of the moment might seem really big, but the country rolls on, due to its government, institutions, and people. The problems, throughout Canadian history, have always seemed big. Today is no different. We have a leader who, like him or dislike him, loves the country and is doing what he feels is best for it. You may not agree with him, but it seems infinitely preferable to what is happening south of the border, where the leader's only concerns are self-enrichment and self-aggrandizement.

The only reason I've ever had to spend time in Richmond was because the hotel rates in Vancouver proper were too high for our corporate rate caps for a given trip. It was never "ooh Richmond is lovely this time of year". It's "the place you drive through to get to / leave Vancouver via the airport".

Aside: What the hell, man? What part of what I said implied a racial component? Why would that even enter into your mind, never mind be the first conclusion you jump to?

It's not the only reason you'd ever go there. They do have a costco, and an Ikea.

It's not a dump, it's really just a typical suburb for the most part, and then the core is full of asian restaurants and a fairly large mall.

You’ve been branded racist, you are cooked!

Was out there a while back at the arena Delta plays in. That’s definitely a dump.

Well, consider me mistaken. Mississauga, eat your heart out!

I feel your pain in the sense that you make an entirely innocent, unrelated comment and someone takes it completely out of context and adds a completely unrelated angle to it. I guess it’s the nature of the world these days.

“Canada is cooked/broken.”

Whenever someone expresses that sentiment, it’s a safe bet they’re ignorant of the state of affairs anywhere outside of Canada.

It probably doesn't help that there seems to be constant rhetoric over the last few years about existential threats to Canada and democracy. By many accounts, we have been under the worst existential threat in Canadian history this year.

It probably doesn't help when political leaders spend years going on and on about how broken Canada is, how it doesn't work as a country, etc. You know, standard Conservative messaging.
