Don't think cap issues matter much here.

Saw a tweet from JFresh the Habs have Dobson, Hutson, Guhle, Caufield, Suzuki, and Slafkovsky locked up long-term, and by 2030, their cap total should only be about 38 percent of the cap.

Kaprizov had a full NTC. He could just nope out of every deal the Wild tried to make. Or provide a very short list - like the Florida teams + the Rangers. So let’s say the Florida teams can’t fit his expected cap in (which would likely be the case), and the Rangers offer Cuyle + 1st + 2nd.The Wild counter with Cuyle + Lafrenier + 1st and the Rangers just shrug and decide to wait and get their guy on July 1.

This isn’t a case of a GM not GMing hard enough. It’s a case of superstar players in small markets having all the leverage if they choose to use it.

My bad. The NTC changes things as you pointed out.

2nd year player with tons of time to learn to be better in his own end. With the perfect coach to teach him. Love this deal. Kid is on the ice constantly working on his craft.

Habs management looking pretty good recently.

He will be somewhat limited defensively until they are able to figure out how to coach him to be taller.

I will never get tired of this joke.

And solid deal for Hutson. Sets the bar for Zayne's deal coming off his ELC, depending on how his first 3 years go.

Could be worse, who knows though, it might be another 20+ years...next Canadian team cup winners might not be born let alone drafted.

I think its related to the general nature of hockey management. The fact of the matter is, these guys are only thinking of the immediate moment or the short-term, the current GMs know full well that when the Bill comes Due, and it always does, they'll be nowhere near to face any consequences so WTF do they care?

They're looking at the 'here and now.'

18.35m for Dobson and Hutson sounds about right. Just thought the allocation would be a bit different.
