Got the S95F mounted and set up over the weekend.
The change from a QLED to an OLED is massive. Movies have never looked better, and gaming on the PS5 pro is incredible.

We watched a few movies in 4K (Se7en, Shawshank, Shaun of the Dead), and the level of detail, especially in dark scenes, is amazing to see.

My old TV was ~5 years old and still in great shape, but the technology shift to OLED is a gamechanger. I'm blown away.

True Black is a game changer. Especially now that movies / TV shows are going all in on dark scenes.

Such an annoying trend. It makes watching certain scenes in shows nearly impossible in brighter rooms, and that's even with a good HDR set.

So I have a 55" LG from Costco that I bought in 2017. It works great, amazing picture, but since I no longer have cable I rely on the apps (netflix, etc), which I've installed via the LG store.
The issue is that the SoC definitely wasn't designed to handle the 2025 version of the apps, and I've had times where I've had to hard reboot the TV just to get Netflix not to crash.

I'm trying to decide whether I should spring for a new Samsung like mentioned above, or just find a good box from which to run all the streaming apps.

Thoughts?

Get a Google Chromecast/Streamer or whatever they call it now if you want something cheap that works well. Or get an Nvidia Shield if you want the best streaming experience possible and is also pretty decent at light gaming

Most people would replace their TV after five to seven years, so grabbing one of the new Samsungs would be the optimal option.

Buying a chromecast is a much cheaper option. Plugs into a hdmi port and runs your apps smoother than an eight year old TV's native apps.

Yeah when my Vizio TV would no longer install a few of the streaming apps due to version stuff I just got an external device.

Though recently the TV has been popping up with "No Internet" errors while watching something even though it definitely has Internet. They really do make things to be throwaway these days

I wish smart TVs had a "dumb mode" which disabled all the smart stuff and just ran off the inputs that you could switch to when they stop supporting the TV.

Both.

Get a new TV and then get something to stream to your old TV and continue using it.

Yeah, I never use the interface on the TV itself.

And Amazon & Bestbuy have a $500 discount on various LG C5's and G5's. Black Friday is coming up too I guess.

Older consoles work well if you have one...or a used xbox one or PS4 can do all the apps really well and you can find them cheap.

I'd personally recommend a Roku 4K instead of those consoles if the individual will not game with it. I doubt those consoles are going for around <$120 which is what the Roku ultra and stream sticks goes for. But yeah, if it's lying around, it doesn't cost extra.

Plus the thing I like the most about the Roku is being able to use the Roku app on the phone. People, especially kids lose remotes all the time. The phone or tablet as an easy back up/replacement is great.

I always use external media player regardless. I let the tv use the computing power on the picture. Depending on the apps used the fire stick 4K max is the best deal with the nvidia shield being the best device imo.

Personally I would run far away from a Roku. It doesn’t support the good apps like Stremio and kodi and productivity launcher is wonderful on android to have a clean simple setup.

Agreed. I assumed that people that use the internal streaming of a TV won't notice the possibilities between a Roku and something better like a shield or HTPC.

My current plan actually overlaps that. Roku because rest of family can't figure out complexity, and then I just acquired an older Mac Mini for free that I'm planning on turning into an HTPC. I just need to redo some network and NAS stuff to really get it going.

Has anyone used the Homatics Google boxes?

I have been looking at them recently as my Onn Google boxes are getting long in the tooth.
