So the Flames have better forward prospects, better defence in the NHL and coming up, a young stud goalie, a bunch of cap space, and much less annoying members of the media..
CC has the opportunity to do the funniest thing of all time.

On the other hand, signing him to a massive deal for 8 years would be glorious because it ties up a ton of money, and their window is either closing or already gone.

He's the best player in the game in his prime, lol. C'mon, man.

Can a player sign a maximum cap hit contract that stays at 20% in succesive years, or does it have to be a certain fixed amount per year? Can it be a fixed amount per year with bonuses that take the player to 20% of he cap?
McDavid should make the maximum no matter what so money isn't stopping him from signing. He has to have some serious reservations about the team.
It's going to be such a media distraction until he signs and it makes no sense to do that. Everyone in the organization should be pissed off at him for not signing even right now.

That's not a thing, no. When you sign a new deal, the AAV is calculated based on the entire deal and that is the AAV for the entirety of the contract. AAV doesn't go up or down unless a buy out occurs.

I would definitely not sign if I were him. Even disregarding the fact that it’s dung heap Edmonton.
If I were him I’d also sign in Calgary.

From afar, it’s a really easy decision for him. Play this one year, and then make a decision on where to play. He’ll have such a better sense of the Oilers future chances at that point and will understand what every other team could offer. Even committing short term isn’t a compelling stance since time is of the essence for where he is at for his career.
The only issue is potential injury. Get a policy to guarantee payment for the next 4 years as a hedge (and pay handsomely for it) but then all the boxes are ticked and you see how this year goes. Which will likely be poorly and we can then finally rejoice.
And it is hilarious that Calgary with a great young tender and really nice complimentary pieces (and a new arena coming) would actually be a great place for him. But we’ll win without him in due course.

His current contract brings him to the end of his prime years if he follows a typical NHL aging trajectory. The 29-30 year is when production typically starts declining.
His speed is a big part of his game, so it seems likely he'd follow a typical trajectory or maybe even a sharper drop off. It's pretty unlikely he'd be a top player in the back half of that contract, and might only be a tier 1 type superstar for the first couple years.

I wish him as much success as the last superstar I remember basing their game on blazing speed ... Pavel Bure.

Yeah, it's this, and he's also "arguably" the best player in the world on half the ice.

Draisaitl still doesn't have decent linemates so we always have to double shift and stack the top line just to stay afloat. I'll admit it must suck.
Oilers are easily top 3 for worst media markets.
He fields this question daily.
Who knows what the negotiations are like, but from some comments made by other players, it sounds like the team is pretty ####ty at it outside of Draistl who seems to be "friends" with the owner.
Oilers could be floating the hometown discount button hard, we will never know

I've seen little evidence he has actual thoughts.

Well, main camp has officially started, and still no McDavid contract. Oiler fans must be in absolute meltdown mode at this point, lol. Ya gotta love it!

Wrists are tricky injuries. He may never be the same player. Especially considering his age.
3 more years on his contract.

They're going to have to lean heavily on Trent Frederic.
