That seems like a baseless accusation towards the Stampede.
They know how much the city loves John & the family, but personally - I dont know how they did it. Paraded around the league while putting on some real brave faces while trying to grieve their sons.
Lets let them rest, and actually have time to grieve in private outside of the public eye.

His wife Meredith too. I couldn't believe the strength she showed during the toughest time of her life.

Did the drivers trial ever have a verdict/sentence? Doing a quick search I can’t find anything

Another court date is scheduled for June.

How much do new threads cost these days? We could start a gofundme.

I'm going to start one after I'm done eating breakfast. And then watch it sink like an anchor while this one gets bumped well into the 22nd century.

Meredith penned a letter to Johnny on the Players Tribune.
Just... beautiful, tragic, sad, refreshing, and everything all in one.
We were so lucky to have him. But my heart breaks again for his children. Her resilience and composure through it all though, and also getting insight into her life has brought even more perspective and respect for the both of them as a couple and as a family.
I got through the whole letter without shedding a tear, til the end. I started to get the lump in my throat and the tears came. Being a father, my heart hurts.

When we moved to Columbus, though, we got one of the most precious gifts in the world. Time. Just time with our families.

So much truth in those words. I'm glad Johnny was able to spend what time he had remaining with his family closer to him.

NY Times article interviewing the family 1 year later. New family interviews....
Be forewarned. Don't read this before you have to see anybody or do anything important. I had to stop midway because I started crying.
Just a stoic reminder of how short life is and how the people involved have to navigate life still as the world still turns.

What a nice but heartbreaking article. Crazy to think how it's been almost a year since this tragedy. I'll never stop being sad thinking about what happened.

I vividly remember those days. And it was an onion of sadness with layer after layer of storyline that made the tragedy sadder. Monahan moving to CBJ so their sons can be raised together. Matty's wife being pregnant. The incident happening the night before their sister's wedding. Meredith revealing that she was actually pregnant also. The mutual love between Calgarians and his Family.
Boomer said it best that day. Flames fans lost Johnny twice and it hurt.

Can't believe it's been a year, and it's still really hard to accept that it's even real. I was sitting in London Heathrow airport about to fly back to Calgary when the rumours that this happened started being shared. I remember it was the only thing I could think about the entire 9 hour flight, and seeing whether it was true or not was the first thing I did when I finally had phone service again.

Just an utter tragedy, compounded several times over with all the accompanying news as was previously said.
Aside from the obvious tragedy the family had to deal with, i remember a handful of things very vividly that I personally experienced.
1st was telling my son what happened. The look of utter despair in his face and then seeing him break down, shook me the most. He's never experienced any loss in his life up to that point, and hearing his favorite player and the reason he plays hockey passed away, was too much for him.
2nd was visiting the memorial when I went to Calgary for work. Sobering and powerful. My son wrote a letter that I laminated and brought along with skittles he bought, and i left it there. I spent probably 45 minutes just taking it in, and reading everything I could.
3rd was all the tributes, but in particular, the one when Sean came back with Columbus. I saw his face in that faceoff and it crushed me.
Last was George Canyon's rendition of Johnny Be Good. I didn't think I could be broken so easily from a song, and I bawled. Typing that and thinking of that song is making me cry again to be honest.
It does bring me happiness seeing the family's updates and how they have moved on. The strength of every one of them is something to behold

RIP to the most talented flame i ever got to watch. An inspiration to many smaller players around the world. Magic every time he controlled the puck. Scored goals on shots only he could make/ would take.
RIP also to another great hockey player and by all accounts great man and father.
What happened to this family is one of the biggest tragedies in nhl history.
