That's so nice to see.

I really hope the Flames retire his number next season, I feel it's warranted.

Wait till the youngest of his kids is 12 so thst they're all old enough to appreciate what their Dad meant to the city. Fittingly it would be 13 years after the tragedy to officially retire number 13.

I don't think it would make sense to wait that long. Either decide to honour his number on that level or don't. I feel we should do it in the next year or two, personally. Based on what he accomplished here and the fact that he passed on so tragically. There's no written rules on jersey retirements, and I feel that this would be nice for everyone.

Did you even read my post?

2 young kids won't have memories of their Dad playing in the NHL and one never got the chance to meet him.

I'd rather all his kids were old enough to appreciate the moment when it happens. To me they're the ones who are the most important to provide a heartfelt moment to cherish for the rest of their days. The Flames waited 11 years to retire Kiprusoff's number. We can wait for the three Gaudreau children to be old enough to remember a ceremony like this for the rest of their lives.

I agree that it would be nice to wait so all his kids can appreciate what their father meant to people.

If they do decide to retire his number earlier though, they could still have a night to honour Johnny and Matty when the kids are older.

I read your post for sure, as I responded to it. Was just saying it makes more sense to do it present day (next couple years) when it makes sense and his kids will appreciate and understand as they grow up. Is there precedence for a jersey retirement (whether through accomplishment/tragedy or a combination of both) waiting a decade to happen to wait for kids to grow older?

They will understand it and appreciate it in their own time and their own way as they grow older, if the Flames decide that the number should be retired. And I think it should be. Not sure why so hostile with that reponse.

Bill Barilko died in 1951 and his number was retired in 1962.

Was he on some sort of excursion when he died? What season was it?

Plane crash after a fishing trip (1951). Did not find the plane until 1962 and was considered missing before that.

Was there ever a hockey card produced regarding it?

For how many missions did you wear that cap?

Wish we could start a new thread to celebrate Johnny and Matt and have all the great recent stuff posted there instead. This thread title is just such a huge bummer to see every time it's bumped up, even when it is bumped for celebratory reasons.

It would be nice to have it be the first jersey retired at Scotia Place.

I'll be fine with whatever the Flames do.

I remember when they did Niewendyk's forever a Flame and him saying it was important to him because his kids never saw him play as a Flame and he felt his best days as a player was when he was a Flame. So he was happy that they got to see that part of his career when they were older.

Fans in Calgary will not forget Gaudreau anytime soon, and I am very biased. But all of Gaudreau's big play highlights were from when he was a Flame. Guy, Jane, Meredith all got to see this. So to me it would be nice for hid kids to get to see it when they're a bit older. The family will know the day is coming long before fans do. So I don't get why some insist it has to happen in the next year or two.

Anything significant about the last goal he ever scored?

I hope there's going to be a Gaudreau memorial/statue/section in the new arena.

Still disappointed that the Stampede didn't ask Guy and Jane to be marshals this year. Would have been a fantastic way to honor the Gaudreau's and continue to show Calgary's appreciation to them.

Maybe I missed this but where is that emanating from?

Did someone ask the CS if they asked the Gaudreau’s to Marshall the parade and the response from CS was ‘no’?

I’d be a bit surprised if that was the case. For all we know, maybe they did. But even that I doubt. As much as people want to continue to show their support for the Gaudreau’s, they’re obviously still grieving and are in the midst of a trial which would be an understatement to say is very hard.

Maybe the Gaudreau’s don’t care to be put in the spotlight like that. Maybe they don’t have interest in helping kick off a 10 day party at this point.

I cannot imagine experiencing the loss of your two sons in the public eye.

Mr and Mrs Gaudreau have strength I can only dream of.
