That’s fine, but better to mess with their cap now than later when they’ll need to eventually give raises to their young forwards.

Kraken have $7M in cap space, so it should be a pretty easy match for them.
They do have a slight roster problem in that they only have 12 forward under contract and 7 D (before Evans). Signing him to $4.6M cap hit would mean they have 6 D all making over $4M, which is not really ideal for the cap structure.
It doesn't really matter though because they would still have $2.4M to add a forward for their 23rd roster player. (If they graduate a prospect on an ELC then they'll have plenty of cap space for their full roster)
Considering the ages of the rest of the Kraken D, they really should sign Evans and trade Oleksiak (and Grubauer) to clear enough cap space for a big addition up front on forward. They definitely have enough futures to try and be buyers this season and try to make some noise in the playoffs.

If Zary was worth what he is asking for, wouldn’t another team offer sheet him?

Straight cost in dollars is different from cost in dollars + picks and potentially losing a team you can deal with in the near future.

No. Successfully offer sheeting a player is the same as trading assets for a player, not simply signing them. The only difference is the trade compensation is set in stone for an offer sheet rather than a negotiation.

I’m sure they’ll match. But even then, they’ve got to get rid of Oleksiak considering they just signed Lindgren.

Teams are not going to offer sheet a guy when they know the Flames will match. Him not getting an offer sheet is not an indication that he is not worth what he is asking for.

I do wonder if these higher RFA dollar vs the draft compensation is holding these guys up a bit. If I was there agent I would be using the you would not trade this guy for a second round pick...so pay him at this level. Many teams have cap space and outside of these players...not much to spend it on.
No team wants to flinch and give in first, and no one is willing to be the Fox in the hen house and drive up prices that they know will be matched.
Evans for a 2nd round pick is something I would do. Im sure the Krsken would not

Seems like a lifetime ago we were having that debate.
The main RFA's yet to sign from this (apologies for the Sportsnet link)
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...mours-reports/
Luke Evangelista
Ryker Evans
Luke Hughes
Mason McTavish
Marco Rossi
Connor Zary
Others like Alexander Holtz, Wyatt Kaiser, and Mykael Pyytia sill not signed.
Have to think the bottom three will end up at QO.
|
I suspect most, if not all of these guys will sign something before October. I do remember a time before the cap when it wasn't uncommon to have players every season hold out well into the season. I wonder with the cap going up by large increments, if we don't start seeing more teams sticking to internal budgets below the cap ceiling sort of simulating the pre-cap era, leading to more teams playing hardball with players. Just a thought, but maybe not.

Please loop me into any semi-private group chats that share gifs and insider tidbits. Looks like we might lose one of the better posters because some folks are acting like someone pissed in their cereal just because the info didn’t result in a trade. I’m here for the scoops from Royle, Sec, Diss, Rasta, etc., those are the posts I actually care about. I usually skip most of the opinion stuff.

With the cap going up, salaries are bound to increase, so I would have absolutely no problem giving him 3 X 4.5M. I think his production is going to increase quite a bit over the next three seasons.

Sounds like not a big deal and like this is pretty much settled. He’ll be signed by camp.

And at the expiry of the 3 year deal, he'd still have 1 year left before being UFA I believe? He would be RFA with arbitration rights. That could get sticky. Probably as much of a factor as the AAV. Longer than 3 buys UFA years, so AAV would have to go up. 2 years is probably nothing the player wants to sign.
