Problem is I had bought one of these before for my friend for Xmas last year (we do a secret Santa thing in my group). He, too, has a healthy respect for bears and his job takes him out into the woods, so he likes having it. Well, when we were all playing with it and tossing empties in the air to stab them a la indoor clay shooting but with a spear, I thought it was perfect. I guess I didn't try walking around with it as a walking stick, though. Just assumed it'd be perfect.

Now I'm out $124 or whatever it was for a too-short walking stick. Ugh.

I might put some feathers or something on it as a show of respect for indigenous communities and hang it up in my garage.
Can you use it for jousting on your Rascal?

Maybe grab an old broomstick or something and combine them for the extra length.

Kids went to a camping focused day camp last week and now love whittling and are hoping to use their chore money for a camping knife. Any recommendations from the experts in here? I’m thinking something with a fixed blade and fairly cheap.

If you could find one of the “Rambo” survival knives that would be the bomb for them.

Growing up, the knives I liked the most were folding and my favourites were Swiss army (not fixed) and Buck (locking).

I'm not sure if fixed blade makes sense for whittling because I've never tried it. I've always used folding.

Also, a $20-30 wood chisel set might be worth looking into, but I admit I now use it more for carving the outside of jack o lanterns than whittling.

I’m becoming a machete enthusiast. A small one is easier to hide than a chainsaw.

I will also recommend the Swiss army style knife which can be used for other things if the desire to whittle fades.

And cpnsider a swiss army knife with a cork screw. I keep mine in my vehicle and I occasionally run to my vehicle to grab just for that specific tool.

Tweezers and scissors are great to have too.

You can probably get something half-decent on Amazon (I know, I know) whereas I buy most of my knives from Kent of Inglewood.

All I can really say is that, I'd go there at least for some advice, because if they want to do whittling the next most important element to consider is sharpening stones.

The most dangerous knife to it's wielder is a dull knife.
