People who only want a car to get them from A to B don’t understand the joy of more HP. I’m shocked!

I mean my VW Sportwagen with the 1.8 TSI and DSG only has 170hp and will pass on the highway with ease all day long.

250hp with the right transmission and driving style is a good amount of power.

We finally got our Sierra sold and are now driving a new to us Grand Cherokee with the Hemi. That thing is a blast to drive, as long as not too many tight corners are involved. It’s a bit scary how quickly it’ll go from 115 to 140 and beyond.

This is wild mindset to me.

My first car was about 8 seconds, and that felt slow. My next car was 175 hp and 7.1 seconds, and at no point did I struggle to merge on a ramp or feel like a hindrance in traffic.

A vehicle that does 4.5 seconds to 60 is an objectively quick vehicle and can rapidly exceed any speed limit in this country.

I measured my current car at 4.0 and it would scare my girlfriend if I punched it.

I dunno if people are watching too many YouTube reviews of all these cars with sub 3 second 0-60 that they're losing the bigger picture but in what universe is 250 hp not enough? Stop trying to race M4 Competitions and you'll be fine.
I think you misread that, 4.5 seconds to go from 50 to 70 MPH, that's 4.5 seconds to go from 80 KM/H to 112 KM/H at pedal to the floor. That's abysmal.

250 horsepower is not enough, and this is especially the case with how heavy vehicles have become.

Ok we’re not all driving Aston Martin’s here. Agree that’s slow, but abysmal? How fast do we need to go 80-112?

All this HP talk makes me laugh, I read this last night and it's pretty funny seeing the performance numbers on cars we thought were awesome back in the day, and most that I would still enjoy driving today. We are definitely spoiled at this point in the automotive timeline.

I would say 250 hp is adequate for CUV's but a larger SUV needs 300+ hp or it's going to be a bit of a dog in some driving situations. Lightweight compacts such as the Civic can still get by on around 200 hp but as mentioned it all comes down to the vehicle weight.

This is a sad reminder that it's that time of year again; where the drivers with the unrealized sense of inadequacy #### up the passing lanes for the rest of us.

Those of us with actually powerful vehicles really appreciate your heroic pass, accelerating from 88km/h to 94 in a whole passing lane, so one or two cars can make it by the loser in the rented RV.
Heroic? Nah. Sidekick at best. My worst vehicle is a van and I always check the rear to see if there's a way to get as many of us past the vehicle when the passing lanes open up. I take a quick peek to see if I will just gun it, or if I'll wait for a vehicle or two before slipping behind them. Also, if I notice someone trying to pass me, I release my accelerator/cancel cruise control. I was taught this, but I don't recall where I learned this. It might have been my AMA instructor telling me about his drives in Europe, but I don't think it was in the class.

I'm not saying that more HP isn't more fun. I'm saying it's plenty in a car if you know what you're doing. But what I also don't get is this, if I had 350HP plus, I'd have more power to be more confident in passing and considering passes on the broken yellow lines. Sometimes I let those $100K+ looking sports cars and SUVs to go first, only to regret it. It's because afterwards, it's just another camper who doesn't have an excuse for going so slowly.

I'm feel like part of the "Less than 350HP is slow" mentality contributes towards the people with blistering fast vehicles to drive them below speed limit and vehicles far below their capabilities. I'm not saying any of y'all. I'm just saying we all probably hate them just the same. I hate such people more than I hate someone who is doing their best but unable to. Person in a $100K+ vehicle barely accelerating on the pass lane/taking way too long in the left passing lane allowing only 2-3 vehicles to pass the struggler and making baby ponies cry? WTF man. Or someone who is zooming and weaving, only to completely forget what they were trying to do when they get to the open road? Why you suddenly act like you're in slo mo?

If those are the real world V90 numbers, fair enough. However, I'm pretty sure my van has a worse power to weight ratio to the V90 and I can overtake and not be in the way.

Seriously, all is better if everyone knew the most important rule on the highway. Keep right except to pass. I don't care if someone doing 130 in the left lane. If someone is trying to go faster than that, the person doing 130 is a left lane camper in the GD way. Intentionally slowing the flow of traffic because of whatever philosophy someone may have. ####ing keep right, except to pass... and please add: double check who else is in the left lane before making your attempt. It's too much to ask of humanity though. Maybe one day, self driving will address it.

80-112 KM/h is a pretty good measure of the ability to pass on the highway, merge effectively, etc. Again, at wide open throttle, 4.5 seconds is quite slow. I drive out to BC plenty of times on the two-lane highways and those brief passing lanes we get are brutal when the slowest vehicles in the line-up manage to jump out first.

Someone should start selling long weekend booster packs, little rockets you can use to get past those stubborn motor homes, but don't need all the time.

I'm looking for recommendations on resources.

I'm looking to buy a new vehicle in the next 6months

I'm looking at wagons or 4door sedans, I am done with SUVs.

What are some great websites that can be used to review quality, longevity, technical specs (don't want no low HP).

I'm looking for a long term purchase of more higher end vehicle (Audio/BMW/Mercedes)

This just ain’t true. I’ve driven 7 seater SUVs with sub-300hp and can rip just fine on the highway with them, including quick, safe passing.

More hp = more fun but the above to me indicates a driver issue rather than an engine/power issue.

Horsepower is relative to era. Civics and Corollas in the 90's only needed 120 hp because they weighed in the neighborhood of 2200 lbs. Today those vehicles weigh 3000 lbs.

You sayin' my jalopies are old???

In fairness, the truck is almost an antique in Alberta. The other is just a reasonably sized car(Impreza. No, not white).
