Which is what makes it beautiful! Every year, the Oilers gift out a few roster spots, and every year it doesn't work. And every year they continue to not learn from their mistakes.

Bowman didn’t draft him. Easier to trade prospects you don’t have that attachment to.

Reminds me of Nashville - they don't have a single 1st round pick from the 2010s

Howard has similar stats to Vesey for anyone who is freaking out.

Nobody should be freaking out. The Oilers formula for team building is flawed and will result in only failure.

Yep, their cup window is almost shut so they need to take a gamble on Howard and hope he can be an impact player for them now while he’s still on an ELC deal.

Neither do the Flames - and that’s a separate/ different problem- they do have 7 from the 2020s (and one from the 2000s)

Gifting a guy an NHL spot because he did well in the NCAA at 21 always goes well

What am I missing? Howard finally had a standout offensive year in his d3 season. Those types rarely become players. This is mid tier prospect for mid tier prospect. If you compare their d+1 seasons, O'Reilly beats him handily, and his wasn't that great.

In his draft year, Cullen Potter outproduced Howard in his d+1...

I'm a big fan of O'Reilly's as well- was PO'ed when the Oilers got him. He's going to a good organization, hope he develops well.

Most Oiler fans are neutral or hate the trade it appears. O'Reilly was VERY highly thought of in that organization.

They've purged themselves of Kane, Perry, Holloway, Broberg, Foegele, among others- let them keep getting smaller and softer, and we'll see how they do in the playoffs...
Seems they need more Sam O'reilly's in their pipeline.

Upperclassmen means junior or senior, that's not an impressive lost. The upperclass pool won basically every Hobey Baker besides a few (Paul Kariya, Ryan Miller - freshmen). Voting shifted after Gaudreau's win in 2014 as a junior, when he should have won as a sophomore too.
Your list is better flipped to be honest
Freshmen or Sophomores to win the Hobey Baker since 2015
-2015 Jack Eichel F Fr
-2019 Cale Makar D So
-2021 Cole Caufield F So.
-2023 Adam Fantilli F Fr.
-2024 Macklin Celebrini F Fr.
I know which group of players I'm going with.

Oilers just getting desperate as their window, such as it is, is sliding shut, while coincidently, McDavid is looking out that same window at the green green grass of Southern Ontario.
The Oilers only hope, even though I think it's long been understood by both sides for years now that McDavid will be leaving sooner than later, is that they can convince McDavid to sign a 2 or 3 year extension.
He'd be an idiot to waste more of his career and prime up there but it's the only hope the Oilers have to have him play past this season.
Any team he goes to in the next 2 or 3 years will be more stable and functional, with a properly built roster, development, coaching, leadership, so McDavid just has to play hockey and adding him will vault a mid-high tier team into contender status. Meanwhile the Oilers are waiting for legal proceedings to pass to see if they have a shot at a few players, and are scouring Euro leagues to find the next "best player not in the NHL" to try and keep the wick burning on McDavids Edmonton candle.
