There was the "whopper" of the LA offer as well.
Which sounds like, but not confirmed, included a goalie prospect (George?) and picks on top of it.
There was also a report it was just picks.
I imagine some combination of George + 1st + maybe another pick?
I think there were reports that other teams like Carolina and CBJ were interested but Rasmus wouldn't commit to signing there. We've heard nothing about what those offers may have been.

whether we like it or not, Ras has every right to not commit to an extension.

Yup. This is his one chance at his biggest pay day.
And he is also deciding where he and his family are going to live for 6-8 years.

I have no ill will towards Ras. It is a big decision and ultimately his decision.
He doesn't owe us anything.

Except that he could have been more upfront with his plans - talked about cooperating, then pivoted last second and said screw it

He owes us for how he played against the Oilers in the playoffs. Big time!

There's a lot of ifs and hopes in that defence. Liljegren is terrible - ask Leaf fans. Muhkmadhulin is a huge question mark to me. He hasn't proven a thing. Which also applies to your bottom pairing and Askarov.
Now, I seriously doubt whether Andersson has them on his NTC list, so if they are willing to trade for him and hope to convince him to extend, great. They have assets the Flames would love, and they look to be trending towards some logjams up front.
|
In my readings, the Sharks fans definitely disagree with your assessment: - Liljegren is terrible as a top pairing RD, which is what he had to be last year. As a second or third pairing guy he will be fine.
- Mukhamadullin is someone that the Sharks fans are very high on. 23yo NJD 1st round pick who is ready to take the next step after playing 30 games last season. He might not get to start out as the #2LD but Ferraro is still there at the start of the season to split duty with.
- Thompson sounded like a serviceable third pair. Sharks fans definitely wanted to keep him over Thrun and Desharnais.
- Dickinson is as exciting to the Sharks as Parekh is to the Flames and he just won the CHL Defenceman of the Year award. So even if you are not sure about him, the rest of the hockey world seems to think he is really good.
- Leddy and Klingberg being added to the group allows them options to ease in the rookies
- They are also hoping that Cagnoni breaks into the lineup too
- Askarov is basically Wolf 2.0 - Once Wolf graduated to the NHL, Askarov was the best goalie prospect not yet in the NHL
Adding Andersson (or any other #1RD) is a huge boost to that D group as it can push all of the other RD down the list to play in roles where they can be more successful. Without that add, that group is going to struggle if Klingberg is the #1RD.

SJ has nowhere near that team. And won't for several more years.

The Sharks forward group is loaded with young talent and a couple of good vets. The word from the Sharks is that they want Celebrini, Smith, and Wennberg to be their C depth and then build out from there.
Depending on how many prospects they graduate their forward group could look like this:
Eklund-Celebrini-Toffoli
???*-Smith-???*
Kurashev-Wennberg-Dellandrea
Gaudette-Ostapchuk-Grundstrom
X:Goodrow
Prospects: Musty-Bystedt-Chernyshov-Halttunen-Lund-Graf-Misa
*Apparently the Sharks are putting Ferraro on the trade block to try to fill a middle 6 spot. Thrun may also be traded.
However they fill these last forward spots, this group doesn't look like it is 5 years away. Not unless they are going to try and draft and develop every missing spot in the roster... At which point the entire management group should be fired for failing to pull out of the rebuild.

If McDavid plays out his deal and signs in free agency, I'd say the Sharks are a lot closer to contending than 5 years.
Seriously though if I'm McDavid I'd give Edmonton one more go this year (what a disaster that will be) and sign as a UFA in San Jose. Surrounding yourself with Smith, Celebrini, Misa, Eklund, Dickenson and Askarov would be unlike anything he's had in Edmonton all this time.

I would think San Jose would be the last place McDavid would go lol.
High taxes
Far from home
Really bad team
Lots of travel
Meh fans/passion
I doubt having a couple of young potential star players is going to attract McDavid
He wants to win. Now.

My point there was that on the surface, Conroy maybe didn't learn the lesson.

What offers were on the table that Conroy turned down?

So, now players should be forced to accept a contract they may not like with a team they may not like?

no but the 8 year advantage should be more of an advantage to the club who drafted and developed...that is why it was added in the first place so smaller markets could hang onto their stars. Now its becoming yet another advantage for the Vegas and Floridas of the league. This trading Marner a day before free agency so he still gets the 8 year deal is dumb, they should have to re-up far earlier to take advantage of an extra year IMO.

By all accounts they are a substantial deal with LA, given Holland's work I dont doubt it

No it wasn’t. The league wanted 5/4. The hill they would die on

Business is business. Relationships only carry so far and this is a hugely impactful decision for Andersson. The Flames decided to not take advantage of leverage when they had it.

If getting rid of the sign & trade deal becomes important to try and maintain parity in the league then I am sure there are rules that could be baked in...
1) In order to receive the longer contract term, the player must play X amount of the new contract with the signing team
2) In order to ensure good faith on the team, the player is automatically granted a NMC during the X amount of games that they must play with the team to receive the longer contract term
3) If the player and team agree to waive the NMC and trade the player before X amount of games/seasons are reached then the contract is shortened automatically by 1 year
Then figure out a reasonable number for X. 1 year? 50% of the contract?
Something like this would give the advantage to a team that drafts and develops a player without turning it into trade ammunition to the "Have" teams.

Funny that a Flames GM was the pioneer of the sign and trade.

And kind of ruined the trade market in doing so.

Not the first time. GM Sutter was the pioneer of the front loaded contract that they had to make rules against in later CBAs after other GMs took it to unreasonable extremes.
