I don’t even think it’s a money thing, it’s a legacy thing.
Before today, i doubt Ekblad would get his # retired by Florida, he’s been a good soldier but ultimately not the guy to bring them glory. Now though? He’ll be a career panther and was there for the good old days. This deal guaranteed he’ll be in the rafters.

No, once a player is a UFA, he can only sign a max 7-year deal even with his old team. Once midnight tonight hits, he wouldn't have been able to sign an 8-year with Florida either.
