Other than foot speed after 35, we should have no concerns about Ras.

If you really want to trade him, then if the narrative around Ras was ‘Flames working on signing him’ then I bet the offers would be better. We’ve painted ourselves into a corner by publicly saying that won’t happen.
I think the ship has sailed here, no?

Reports just a handful of days ago that the two sides do not see eye-to-eye on a contract.

I think this is a case of addition by subtraction. The Flames need to open a spot for Parekh and Bruztewicz not long after. If they don’t get an offer they like, fine, start the year with Andersson and shelter Parekh as much as you can. Make the move prior to the TDL. Is Andersson’s value today going to be dramatically worse in February/March? Probably not. I agree it would be preferable to deal with it now, but, as unpopular an opus’s this is going to be, they’re not in a spot right now to trade him for whatever they can get. The Flames do have leverage here.

It very well could be worse, far worse.

Andersson by most accounts had an outright bad year last year, just some flashes of his former self. If that continues his value probably drops.

Or what if he gets an injury and misses significant time?

Yes there's a possibility of trading him for a decent return at the deadline as a rental, to more teams than just those he'd consider re-signing with.

But I'd say still move him now, get what you can, free up a spot in the lineup for some youth to get NHL games, see what we've got.

Were you happy with Andersson's play last year? I was for the first month and a half, then something was off in his play. That was before the injuries. I wasn't a fan of seeing him against the league's top lines, and I think that he struggles to defend against them. Being a fierce competitor is great, but if you're constantly getting scored on when he's out there, then there's a problem. I didn't love how Hanifin - Andersson looked against EDM in the playoffs, and I thought that after 2022 Andersson struggled to develop chemistry with anyone except Weegar for half a year. He was okay with Bahl, and Hanifin. That's why I would be disappointed if Andersson is more than a $7M player for the Flames for the next 8 years.

As for building a contending culture, it has to be transmittable to the young guys. If it goes away the second you trade a vet, then it's worthless.

That said, I think that Andersson is a very good asset especially to a cap strapped contender. He's less of an asset for the Flames since they're not spending to the cap this season anyway.

Flames did offer him a contract. Rumours are they are far apart in money and term. Sounds like ras wants $8.5 million for 8. That’s a no go for me.

Avoid all things Dom on the Athletic. Guy comes off as a total prick on podcasts too.

Sure, but if I'm being very honest about the player, that's about what Rasmus is worth. It's only the scarcity of his type of player that could drive the cost up beyond what you listed.

So many people it felt were reassuring fans that a year of Ras especially with some money retained would get us an even better deal. Seems to be worthless

So it’s the Hanifin situation all over again. Granting the player space because they think they can maximize return by getting it to go with an extension, when all that really does is turn the table and effectively give the player a full-NTC which doesn’t actually improve trade value.

Just trade him as a player with 50% retained on a 1-year contract and be done with it.

This has always been about what Ras is worth. Look at the Hanifin return and that’s my expectation for return. It will be whelming but the real positive is not paying a player who likely won’t age well.

California would be near the absolute bottom of where I’d choose to go play. Their on-ice team is mid, and I’d have zero interest in living in California.

Sometimes people reveal their nature in the most surprising and unexpected ways. I can't get my head around this statement.

How many rakes can the Calgary Flames step on or have thrown in front of them? The one time a player is like “California? No thanks…”
