Imagine, if you will, a world where someone thought I was serious about building a bridge to Vancouver Island, you've crossed into another Dimension...

Yeah and we could make it out of those floating plastic blocks that interlock together! That would be completely workable.

Granted...those are probably also made in China.

Or perhaps a zipline of some sort?

I live on Van Isle and sometimes I do wish there was a way to build bridge or tunnel between here and the mainland. It’s become more difficult to travel by ferry over the years with population growth, busted down ships and the need to book reservations to go anywhere. Prices have also increased a fair bit.

If such a bridge were constructable, which it ABSOLUTELY isn't, can you imagine the traffic? And then someone would get into an accident on it and... yeesh.

I'd think that catapult that they use to shoot satellites into space could work.

First of all, the Chinese have built longer and more complex bridges and second of all, thats the beauty of a bridge!

"Oh you've broken down or had an accident have you? Alright, come on lads, PUSH!! HEAVE!! Over the side boys! Over the side!!"

And then traffic flows nicely again.

Although I still prefer 'Plan A' which is to turn Vancouver Island into a Penal Colony like they did in 'Escape from New York.'

You just airdrop people in and they're not your problem anymore. If Granny still lives on the Island at the time of conversion then she'd best get her gun.

Hard to get mad at BC. North American shipyards are nowhere close to being able to build anything and Japan and Korea are slammed with the US ship tax.

The problem would be induced demand but BC ferries only does about 8 million vehicles per year which is only 20,000 a day.

Deerfoot does 83k-170k depending on area. So well within a 2-3 lane road in each direction. You’d have to have a full size shoulder but traffic and accident management aren’t the deal breaker on this thing.

The BC government has a good webpage on the various challenges and technologies and comparison to other bridges

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/t...and/fixed-link

My favourite is the floating underwater tunnel of death.

Should copy the Chinese and make the ferries dual use civilian/military to justify building up our industry. The Vancouver island ferry doesn’t need to be an ice breaker but make it one anyway!

Seriously though, those ferries would be awesome for mass drone launches

You could potentially build a chain of smaller bridges north of Campbell River and connect to the mainland that way but with the seismic activity around the island anything like the Confederation bridge isn't possible.

but that doesn't really work either. There no possible way to build out the Malahat or build a proper 6 lane highway connecting Victoria to the rest of the island.

Lots of talk recently about major, national projects and with that we should just build a chunnel from north Vancouver to Nanaimo.

What are you thinking? Like....Chunnel style? We contract some fentanyl tweakers on each side and they start digging and meet in the middle? Yes! Then we could have a train that connects the two!

Problem. Solved!

Only ten would be a dream. You double that than triple it if you include the word count of his never ending signatures.

What would be more hazardous? Tunneling under the Strait of Georgia or the 401?

Hrmm, they both do excellent jobs at limiting the efficient movement of people and goods...

Hah, there is no comparison. There is nothing like this anywhere else on earth because there SHOULDN'T be. Even if they built such a thing I wouldn't drive on it unless you put a gun to my head.

A series of bridges to the Sunshine Coast is sort of more viable, and with another set of bridges up around Campbell River you could conceivably create a link. But none of the Howe Sound islands would allow a bridge, and it'd take so long to drive that route that it'd be a wasted effort.

The government was set to receive the first payments (approximately $2B USD) of the new Digital Services Tax tomorrow but in a late Sunday night move they have decided to scrap the DST.

That is essentially what the link says.

Yup. Carney obviously being the adult in the room by extending an olive branch to the U.S., and apparently the trade talks have now resumed with the goal of hopefully reaching some kind of deal by July 21st. I’ll believe it when I see it.

In the meantime Canada just needs to continue strengthening ties with our other allies around the world just like we’ve been doing since all of this bulls*** started. It’ll be a difficult road, but the sooner we can wean ourselves off the U.S., the better.
