Some of the way too early 2025 Draft grades are in

1. Daily Faceoff
https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/20...l-32-teams-did
Flames grade an A-, the top Canadian team, the Oilers a C+ are the lowest Canadian club

2. The Score
https://www.thescore.com/nhl/news/3304956
The Habs, despite no first rounder get the top Canadian grade, the Flames next with a B+, the Leafs (D+) and Oil (D) bring up the rear for Canada

3. Flo Hockey
https://www.flohockey.tv/articles/14...l-32-teams-did
B+ for the Flames (and Jets) at the top, Leafs and Oil bring up the rear with a C

4. NYT/Pronman
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/645...5-team-grades/
The Flames on top with a B, Toronto and Edmonton rocking the bottom with a C, a tighter scoring spread here

I looked around, but didn't see anything posted.

Just wanted to give a huge thank you to Sandman. He has put so much time and dedication into what he does, and shares it with us generously. He makes the draft so much more enjoyable and easier to follow along, and I really appreciate his insights into almost every player. I loved the draft today because he got stumped finally! Just an awesome resource we have here. Thanks!

Bleacher Report gave the Oilers an A- and the Flames a B+. LOL. Not even going to post the link.

crazy to see Hamilton and Rheaume-Mullen go undrafted. Seemed unthinkable a few months ago.

The depth of the draft really fell away into the 3rd round and onwards. Teams started going for size and longer term projects as opposed to the guys we see in other drafts. Drafts like this is where your scouts make a difference.

Yeah I just saw that - they refer to the oilers 3rd pick Lafreniere’s 56 point , -33 season as ‘dominant’

Edit- interestingly they also gave the Panthers an A- while many of the other rankings had them essentially at the bottom

Good visual representation of the 2025 draft. Flames were the most efficient with their selections in adding “surplus value” but didn’t necessarily add the most skill. Gotta add more high draft picks in 2026 and perhaps the Flames will lead in all categories.

WTF. Didn’t the Oilers have like 3 picks and one of them was the last pick overall.

Yeah but those picks were all recommended by Mcdavid.

She noted that the Leafs valued size as the only attribute where they picked, leaving lots of skilled players on the board instead.

Look at their draft class. Only one guy is under 6'3". 2 of them are already over 200 pounds.

If I didn't know any better I'd have thought that Sutter made those picks.

I mean the first guy they drafted Tinus Koblar sounds like some miniature skilled waterbug but instead he's an exotic coke machine

sorry if already posted, but Wheeler is a fan of the Flames class. Had them listed as a "winner", alongside the Islanders, Sharks and Capitals. He used the categories "winners", "overtime winners", "overtime losers" and "losers".

Quote:
The Flames have shown a willingness over the last few years to take some swings on talent, and after finding some on the wing and particularly on defense, they needed to find a couple of centers this year and really leaned into that with the selections of Cole Reschny and Cullen Potter, my No. 15 and No. 16 prospects, in the first round. Reschny is a committed three-zone player with real playmaking sense who was one of the best players in junior hockey in the second half, and Potter is the best skater in the draft for me and has real puck skill. If one of them can become a 2C and a second-line winger for them, they’ll be thrilled with their Round 1 in 2025.

Swedish center Theo Stockselius was a second-round pick for me. He needs to improve his pace and skating, but he knows that, and he’s a very well-rounded player in every other area. I think he has bottom-six forward potential if he can take some steps.

Ethan Wyttenbach is another sign that they’re not particularly worried about size on draft day. Wyttenbach, a Quinnipiac commit, is a late bloomer who was one of the USHL’s most productive players as a rookie this season. He can play the game at different paces and I think he was a fine late-round flier.

The Mace’o Phillips selection at No. 80 was a head-scratcher for me. I’m sure they see a towering physical menace and special athlete who can move and think he could become a fearsome third-pairing option for them someday. But he really struggles to handle and move the puck and I’ve seen him have too many bad games and moments over the last couple of years to see it. He’s definitely different from the other D they have!

My favorite Day 2 Flames pick was the selection of St. Andrew’s College forward Aidan Lane at No. 176. They found good value in Aydar Suniev, another SAC player who had legit skill and scoring but needed to improve his skating. Suniev scored 20 goals as a sophomore at UMass last year and has already been signed. I think Lane, No. 74 on my board, could follow a similar path at Harvard. He just needs the skating to improve.

The Phillips pick felt out of place for me, but I liked what they did a lot.
as for the other Canadian teams, he had the Senators, Jets and Canadiens as "overtime winners", the Oilers and Canucks as "overtime losers" and the Leafs as "losers".

Well worth the read, as pretty much every Wheeler piece is.

It's nice to see people like the Flames draft picks, but I'm also just chuckling at the tone of certainty and ridiculously named statistics. "Value added" OMG.

Ha. When I hire someone at work, on Day 1 I'm going to hand out notes that shows negative value added on day 1 based on their grades from high school.
