Most of the kids they picked in the last few years seem to be stalled in their development. A lot of down draft +1 and 2 years, some have been traded already.

I think what we've seen the last two years in the Stanley Cup finals is probably doing Rossi's value no good.
Kesserling and Doan just isn't as bad a return as I originally thought.
I like Rossi, but he's also 5'9" and barely saw the sunlight in the playoffs.

All that, and to add, the last thing Buffalo needs is another small forward.

Who have the traded?
In searching their prospect rankings, they are still very high.

Nor is their "need" up the middle, if I'm not mistaken.

Draft Pick
|
I think the major difference between Calgary and Chicago is Chicago wanted to rebuild but toews and Kane didn’t want to leave. So they traded anyone of value to make the choice for them. Debrincat, hagel, Dach come to mind. Then they got Pennie’s for Kane from NYR, traded Keith to Edmonton, and seabrook LTIR’d, same with Crawford, and Toews got long Covid and was out and came back for the last handful.
That would be like Calgary trading Zary, Coronato, and Rango, Anderson getting Pennie’s on the dollar, Weegar LTIRing and Kadri same thing not getting any assets back.
It’s gonna take a while for Chicago but let’s face it it’s more of a destination than Calgary, and they gonna have a good base after next year

Most rebuilds fail.
Most non-rebuilds also fail. Nobody is studying the Islanders, Flyers, Wild, Flames, and Preds for the secrets to their success.

Update(kinda?)
Very busy, full house and all hands on deck from Coaching staff through to analytics and trainers.
May be one of the most unique drafts in that they've got people a part of the process that would typically never be present. Heavy into projecting these players long term, they feel there's not a single player that's ready to play in the NHL next year which is not the norm.
Again, high ceiling players as a priority. Skill & Speed a focus.
Flames remain very active, lots of interest in a number of their players.
Question remains what does Craig want to do?
How far does he want to tear this down?
Rasmus clearly the #1 target across the league, my source is still very confident he's moved as both sides have agreed this would be best.
I will echo what Sec said, both sides do have a great relationship and no hard feelings much like Tkachuk when he left. But fact remains they are millions apart in AAV.
Calgary hard at work, working every angle.
Belief still remains that moving up is #1 priority.
Think's a run on centers early will take them out of their "main target"
Not easy to move up, could require some unique moves.
Teams do see Calgary's log jam in the forward group, who is available and at what price?
A few of Calgary's prospects have garnered interest if Calgary wants to explore that.
Wolf & Parekh untouchable, full stop.

Where would Rossi fit on the Sabres depth chart?
Locked in Cs: Norris (1/2C), Mcleod (2/3C), Krebs (4C).
Sometimes play C: Thompson (1/2C), Kulich (2/3C)
Likely a C on the roster by the end of the season: Helenius (2/3 C).
Even if they’ve decided Thompson is not a true C, bringing in Rossi as #2C would block Kulich and Helenius, two of their most promising young players. They’re also trying to get bigger and harder to play against - something they accomplished in bringing in Kesselring and Doan.
Trades aren’t just about value, they’re about addressing specific needs. The Sabres needed help at RD much more than they needed help at C.

So if we’re going to say the tank didnt work (and we’ll see if the next few years) the non tank approach for them also wasn’t working
|
But that's the problem that the tear-it-down people continually ignore: it takes years just to get to the very bottom. This idea that you can tear it down and then be competitive in a few years, is just wildly untrue - the teams that make it right to the bottom are typically bad for 7-10 years +.
MOST tanks don't work. Many teams that tear it down end up having 'multiple tanks'. There is no simple path. And there are no guarantees, ever. Saying a ####ty team is 'right on schedule', is ridiculous.

Chicago was the 7th youngest team in the NHL last season with an average age of 27.

Thanks Royle! Is the goal to trade Ras before the draft? Do your sources sense it's close?
