Good for him. I have heard that everyone loves Hanlon, from executives to coaches to players. Well-respected individual who has been with the organization for 3 decades? Well earned promotion, and I am sure he will add.
Conroy seems like the type of executive that is open to new ideas and suggestions, rather than just close the door and do things by himself. Conroy certainly seems to enjoy those scouting meetings that get released every year where they are all in the same room debating on where to rank each prospect. I am sure Hanlon will bring some new ideas. I like it.

Someone likeable to talk with players. Conroy is great but he's too busy for his usual lengthy chats.

One other thing I've just thought of: The Flames has traditionally been a very tight-lipped organization when it came to player movement. Not a lot of leaks ever got out. I would think Hanlon had something to do with that. That earns trust.

Maybe Lanny? I can't recall if he went right from player to an ambassador role immediately or if there were any gaps over the years.

What are you talking about? I've been an AGM since 2011.
One day it will be my turn!

McDonald was largely estranged from the organization during the Ron Bremner years after having been rebuffed for Hockey Ops positions.

How much of GM's time is messaging (and deciding to not message!) to media? Communications with the league? With agents? Players? I can see a role there.
What about non-hockey ops related business....this is mostly handled by someone other than GM office, but still needs to have some GM involvement. Managing staff, events, ticketing, sponsors, etc.
Now what about the new building....hockey ops and non hockey ops parts.
I guess i can see how Hanlon can take a lot off the GM's plate.

Just trust us on this one.

Pete is highly respected by both Iggy and Conny. This isn't just a boiler plate comms guy. Pete knows puck, is respected by players and management alike. He's a strategist, a relationship guy and overall smart human being. He'll be a tremendous asset the hockey ops department even if he doesn't come from a playing or scouting background; they have plenty of guys like that.

Met Hanlon several times at away games in hotels and restaurants etc. Really nice guy, always willing to say high, let you know when/where practice or morning skate is, or what the team's schedule is.
Congrats on the promotion.
Someone mentioned Mike Burke too, have met him in many of the same places. Maybe he takes Hanlon's job?

I would be worried if Hanlon was the only Assistant GM, but he's not. Hopefully he excels at the position.

Believe mike did the comms role prior to Pete. Mike does salary cap, administration work in hockey ops and that wouldn’t be impacted by this move.

Doubt it. Peter is a native of St John's and Glen has never spent any of his career out there.

Yeah, echoing others, Pistol Pete is a beauty and not just your standard PR guy. Weird promotion on the surface for sure, but a true don't judge the book by the cover move. Respected enough to go on Jarome Iginla's bachelor party as one of the guys as an example.
