Even if the Oilers move Arvidsson, which makes them worse defensively overall, so they can have the money to upgrade in goal, they're still going to need to fill 4 forward spots with spare change.

Shuffling deck chairs, that's all this is

Exactly this, their depth will be much worse...and really what goalie better than Skinner is available?

Kane has come out with one of my social circles before in Vancouver more than once, so he definitely has a network of groups and friends he'll be re-acquainting himself with now that he's back in Vancity. On another hand, I imagine it's different going out as an NHL player of some team and going out as a Vancouver Canuck.

Will be interesting to see the the UFA signings on July 1st. As lots have noted, Kane only has a year left on his deal. So if your goal is to bolster your teams wing depth, trading for Kane is arguably a better value than trying to overpay for a player like Reilly Smith on a multi year deal.

That said, Oilers definitely coming out the winner here. Any time you can get some years of work and some picks out of a UFA signing, you've done well. It only cost their dignity and respect.

Oilers media spun the Kane deal as a hometown discount/took less when he signed it
now it's a shrewd cap dump lol

I wouldn't award them just yet, depends what they use their new cap space for. If they just use it to sign a bottom 6 player for the majority of the next decade, are they really in a better spot?

Oilers free up cap space, but they also lose one of their only productive secondary forwards who is actually tailored to playoff hockey (even if he takes way too many stupid penalties). They'll probably end up bringing in someone even worse to replace him.

Rejoice!
Always a silver lining

Or they could fork out north of $10 mil to Bouchard.

I read an article a week or so ago, saying that Frederic and Kane play essentially the same style and thus Kane was expendable.

Why go all the way to Richmond for the River Rock Casino when the Parq Casino is practically next door to Rogers' Arena? I bet (pun-intended) Kane was looking forward to it.

This is a move that costs a GM their job. Baffling.

I also think Perry and Brown will be an issue for the Oilers.

Brown had 30 points and a good playoff. He deserves more than $1 mil

Perry also had a good season and playoffs.

Kapanen played well enough for a depth guy.

I could see Perry signing for more, but cheap.

Brown is 31 and deserves around $2-$3 mil.

The Oilers aren't getting better.

This is a great move by both GMs and both of them should be extended for a decade or more.

They have a brand new 4th-round pick burning a hole in their pocket. With their scouting proficiency, it has more value for them to trade it to another team rather than using it to draft a player.

Kane lost all his top ice to Hyman, he's not over paid and he isn't terrible. He was one of their better depth players and losing him for nothing isn't a straight addition to their team. They still need to find a way to use that cap for cheap replacement to improve.
Holloway's numbers did not say the same thing.

The numbers showed Holloway, who was on his way up, was better than Kane at that point in time, AND Kane was on his way down.
