Oilers free up cap space, but they also lose one of their only productive secondary forwards who is actually tailored to playoff hockey (even if he takes way too many stupid penalties). They'll probably end up bringing in someone even worse to replace him.
Rejoice!

This is the funniest part for me. For all his many many problems, the Oilers were a better team with Kane than without him.
So they lose him and really gain only enough cap space to maintain what they have, and the Canucks actually pay to add him despite being in no position to benefit from what he brings on the positive side or weather what he brings in the negative side.
This is a hilarious trade. I kind of love it.

He can either by flipped at the deadline for most likely more then the canucks paid as a rental if Van does poorly or helps them be good
Van only has to deal with him for 1 year (or until trade deadline ) and worse case you just tell him to F off and lose a mid pick

It helps the Oilers, but how much still remains to be seen. They have $15 mil cap now, but they are short a body. Bouchard is probably getting $10 mil of that $15 mil. Arvidsson goes too, that gives them $19 mil.
I suspect Brown and Perry will be back, and both will get small raises. Kapanen could be back too with a small raise. If these 3 get close to $5 mil combined, with Bouchard at $10 mil. That leaves $4-5 mil and short a couple forwards. Kane isn't great, but he played fairly decent minutes and is one of their more physical forwards. They are still probably coming back with the same team next year. Not sure if that makes Mcdavid happy as he still has to look at this team as not good enough around him and Leon.

This trade is better for Vancouver than Edmonton even though it sucks for both imo.
Kane is a top 6er on Vancouver and they can probably get a better asset out of him at the deadline.
Edmonton clears cap space but Kane was still a top 6er on their team and they will spend the cap savings on a goaltender like Gibson who I don't think is very good anyways. Can't wait for Edmonton to use a guy like Savoie as his replacement

Not to mention the entire league could've had him at a discount and only the Oilers' wanted him. No one is going to take him for their playoff run to disrupt their team and take penalties imo. Untradeable.

I feel the idea of flipping this human pile of excrement at the deadline is risky. Teams all watched the finals this year and saw this bozo lose his cool and take multiple stupid penalties. I mean the softest playoff team is trading him. That must mean something to other NHL managers.

Yeah I don't think this is so bad. Kane was one of their better depth pieces and losing him will hurt Edmonton more than help.

Vancouver are absolute chuds for doing this, taking full salary for a mid round pick they'll 100% whiff on anyway, grats on adopting a new locker room cancer. Quinn definitely packing his bags as we speak, trash org

I’m not sure I can think of a more stupid trade from Vancouver’s perspective … why on earth would they take on a proven ass AND give up an asset AND get the Greasers out of cap jail? Why?
No…really…why?

The explanation seems pretty straightforward.
1. Boeser is gone, they are short of wingers who can credibly play top 6 minutes and pot >20 goals.
2. Evander Kane is from Vancouver and played for the Vancouver Giants in junior so it's a "hometown guy" thing. Aquilini loves hometown guys no matter how toxic they are: see Virtanen, Jake.
3. The contract year thing etc etc. Kane for 5M on a one year deal is probably what he's worth as a UFA.
Note that explanation /= justification.

Why are the Canucks helping the Oilers? Idiots.

In a vacuum with a template create-a-player with Kane's contract and abilities, this is a great trade.
The issue is really not Kane's on ice ability. It's literally everything else about the man.

The Oilers get worse but now have the potential to improve much more. If this allows them to land a viable Goalie (Along with trading away picks) then it's a good move for Edmonton.
I hate that.

As I said he will be extremely motivated to STFU and earn another contract

I'm a believer in second chances. Maybe Kane is a changed man, and can actually put aside his ego enough to accomplish everything you think he can?
Also, he's known for having an awful attitude, not working hard and antagonizing already bad locker room situations. The other major risk is that this just sends the wrong message to the players in Vancouver and Hughes and/or Pettersson demand out. It sounds like they are letting P. Suter walk, and then they spend assets to bring in Kane?

Canucks win the Calder cup with a ton of bottom 6 candidates and they take on Kane? Would have preferred they gone that route and used the cap space to acquire a legit top 6.

It's pretty obvious why teams want Kane. He's a big body with so-called power-forward "potential", and in a salary cap world with his issues he comes at a discount. He's an idiot, but I can see the allure when you can't attract talent or are up against the cap. Anyway, he's a bum.
