I didn't even consider Vegas for Marner figuring they were probably capped out. You'd think I'd know better by now lol
Of course they will find a way to fit him in and land another elite player.

However, if the choice is between finding out what we have with our home grown players vs. another year of Hanley (or some other vet) or adding Samuelsson then I am not sold that perpetually blocking our player development is worth it.
My hot take is that Samuelsson isn't a big prize, he is an injury-prone cap dump that the Sabres are trying to unload in order to keep their better players. He has 7 goals in 5 NHL seasons and he has missed almost half of those seasons due to injuries. The fact that his cap hit is on the wrong side of $4M doesn't help.
Leave the spot open for Kuznetsov, Solovyov, Poirier, Brzustewicz, Grushnikov, etc. to compete for.

I think that's the point of adding Samuelsson. He has negative value so you'd have to give up less to get the player who you actually want. Weaponize cap space to get assets.
Having said that, I wouldn't do it to get Byram back. He's not that impressive to me and this team does have many young defensemen coming up. I would do it if Peterka was the return though. We need offense more than anything.
If we let go of Hanley and Miromanov, that still opens up 2 spots for rookie defensemen. I doubt they plan to go into the season with more than that.

Yeah, I don’t think they take Vladar (who is a UFA) and the pick would have to be higher. At least.

If Pospisil truly has that kind of value, you sell him.

Taking Pospisil’s skating and advanced stats into consideration, perhaps it would be fair to call him an upper-echelon bottom-six defensive player, but he’s still a bottom-six player. At least, that’s how any opposing GM would spin it to get better trade value.

That is definitely not how I understood the post I was replying to.
If Samuelsson is the cap dump and the Flames get a better asset in the deal, then that would be great. I would export Bean and/or Miromanov and have Samuelsson in the pressbox if it gets us #9OA (or Byram or Peterka). If Samuelsson doesn't turn things around in a couple of years then his contract looks very buy-out friendly.
I would then try to use #9OA to try to trade up to #2OA. I think San Jose would be really happy to take #9OA and use it to pick Mrtka to fill their RD prospect gap.

Interesting. It makes me squirm a bit, so for me, I think value is reasonable. I do think quite highly of Mews though and believe that in the long run, he'll be better than Brz so there's that. There was also that chatter about Byram being a bit of an attitude issue so not sure how that stands.
Would certainly make the LD more solid though.

Does your tune change it it’s Brzustewicz over Mews being traded? I think Buffalo might even be more inclined to make that deal instead because Brzustewicz is closer to being NHL ready than Mews with a higher floor.

Ya, I think it would. I think Brz and Parekh are gunning for the same spot, and likely around the same time frame too. With Mews you get a bit more time and overall I just feel he's going to pan out more than Brz is. Some of it is just gut feeling but a lot of it was from the camp last year. Mews really stood out IMO and then he backed it up with a good year in junior.
Obviously this is just from a fan perspective so who knows what the coaching and scouting staff think. But, if there's legs at all to this rumor, and it's from BUF's perspective, wouldn't you think they would want the better of the two prospects? Perhaps it's telling that they have Mews there and not Brz.

I wonder how much truth there is to the attitude issue. I expect that much of it comes from the fact that Byram thinks he is as good as Powers and thus wants similar $$.
Pospisil would be a good add for a really soft team. He has 27 more PIMs than the PIM leader on the Sabres and we plays with a grit that the Sabres do not seem to have.
I also think highly of Mews. He might be the steal of the draft and the Flames had a number of picks that feel like steals in that draft.
I like Vladar too and would rather extend him, but I think his rights has some value.... not much, but not nothing. Even if the Flames do not want to extend him, the rumour that the Sharks are interested would mean that any other team that might want his services would benefit from having his rights to try and sign him before July 1.
Weird trade from a Sabres fan but if that was really on the table, I would hope that we jump on it and sign Byram to an 8x8.

It doesn't matter who the Oilers get to play goal, they need to get some defensemen who can actually play defense! Nurse, Klingberg, and Bouchard are three of the WORST defensemen in the league in their own zone.
