Marner's betting on himself which is cool and all but when will teams realize that you're paying him 1A money, but he will not lead your team in the playoffs because he physically can't. He's skilled and all, but he will not go through tough d, and he will not grind it out in the corners. When you pay him that much money he should be leading you in the playoffs by doing those exhausting things. He can't and won't.

He probably gets that cap hit at 7 years

Career 0 941 PPG player in the regular season
Career 0.707 PPG player in the playoffs. 0 548 PPG combined in the last 3 playoffs, 0.538 PPG last playoffs, after a brutal 0.286 PPG the playoffs prior.

It's 2 years, how could this hurt our future?
Other than hurting our draft picks, but that ship has likely sailed anyway.
In any event, the offensive opportunities aren't located in Calagry.

I’d argue a couple things. 1) Playoffs tightens up, 2) his linemates have been up and down so of course his production goes down too. Seriously, if you watch the games he’s among the better out there to play smart.

Flames should sign Marner to a 1 year 15 million dollar deal just to trade him at the deadline.

In fairness to Tavares, he has been so brutal in the playoffs which has led to a relatively small sample size (75 games) for a guy who is turning 35. In those 75 games he has 53 points so he is about a 58 point guy in the playoffs.

Presumably he might go to one of the teams with mega cap on a two year max deal as long as the offensive opportunities were there.
|
I just think this type of thing is insanely risky. Take your bag of cash now after you put up amazing numbers… don’t risk career ending injury or putting up more pedestrian numbers and then ending up with half the value you otherwise could have.
Take the money if it’s there. He should be signing a monster deal here.

Not every pick will make it, and given the trades we’ve made and draftees since we too kuznetsov, he’s likely further down the depth chart.
If a player in the age range that we are looking for becomes available and is an upgrade on what we have , you have to pull the trigger. If it upsets a prospect and they bolt, oh well. Draft another prospect.

Sure, roster upgrades are cool. Like I said, if it is a choice between Kuznetsov and Poirier vs. Byram then I think that is a no-brainer.
However, if the choice is between finding out what we have with our home grown players vs. another year of Hanley (or some other vet) or adding Samuelsson then I am not sold that perpetually blocking our player development is worth it.
My hot take is that Samuelsson isn't a big prize, he is an injury-prone cap dump that the Sabres are trying to unload in order to keep their better players. He has 7 goals in 5 NHL seasons and he has missed almost half of those seasons due to injuries. The fact that his cap hit is on the wrong side of $4M doesn't help.
Leave the spot open for Kuznetsov, Solovyov, Poirier, Brzustewicz, Grushnikov, etc. to compete for.

Agree with wolves. This team isn’t going to be competing for anything. It’s time to see what we have. We can always make trades to upgrade.

Buffalo speculated trade with Calgary.
Fan based (Buffalo) from what I can tell, so no apparent validity at this point but I’m asking.
BUF receives:
Mews
Vladar * rights
Pospisil
4th rnd pick
CGY receive:
Byram

I think this works for Calgary well. Mews likely has no room to play here. Vladar is gone. Pospisil basically replaced by Klapka or they chase Jeannot

Frickin sold. There's some really quality in there with pops and Mews but it's Chaffe for Byram. I'll take it. Gives Buffalo some diversity.

I would take that trade in a heartbeat!. I'd prefer Peterka but I'd like Byram too.
