Rishaug topping off his oilers. This deal will get better as the cap rises.
Guy played 11 minutes scored 1 goal is about to be 28 getting a lifetime deal but he’s just going to get so much better.
Doing this the day after being humiliated like the scum they are is another gut punch to those losers.
Maybe Bowman thinks he can get back into the good graces of hockey fans by sewering the Oilers from within and wasting McDavid.

How are they even going to be able to fit this in, they have 12.6 million in cap space. This deal leaves 8.6 for Bouchard which isn't enough to get him signed, let alone the others.

Would they get much relief with a Kane buyout?

With a player like this, you just don't have time to wait for a sober moment to think and analyze where the problems are. You just gotta max term him.
They'd still be battling for 28th if they had to rely on themselves and the league didn't force feed them success.

There is no way they sign him to 4M x 8. I barely noticed him in the playoffs. I thought he was supposed to be a tough guy / agitator type. He had no physical presence at all and obviously wasn’t contributing on the score sheet. This would go down as one of the worst contracts in the league.

I think it's being said everywhere in this thread, but am I right in being baffled mostly by the part where this level of player gets max term?
I don't know enough to know if the $4M cap space is in the right spot, but sounds like this is not a top 6 player. He also isn't particularly young. Why would you ever lock yourself into a bottom 6 player (who you aren't expecting to graduate to a top 6 player because they are young) for max term? Those are the parts you want to be flexible no?

Talk about an over payment on dollars and term! Just like Chia Pet, Bowman is puuting the Oilers in Cap Hell!

Even if you truly believe he's worth the 4 mil, do you really need to go x8 years in order to get him?
why not just do a 4x4 contract?
this is certifiably insane behaviour

It's just to get the AAV down. They will forcibly retire him after the first four seasons of the contract, and the league will look the other way, a la the Mike Smith Special.

I think an angry McDavid said "I won't be signing here, you better trade me to Toronto if you want to get something for your pathetic loser franchise"
Stan Bowman was like... "Holy smokes! With McDavid gone we have a lot of cap space!"

On paper I do get it, I think it was Calle Jarnkrok in Nashville who they signed to a 2M AAV for six years which ended up being a steal. And with rising caps the term ends up even more advantageous

Bickell signed for $4M over 4 years, could actually score (and played well in the playoffs) and ended up with MS which presumably affected his play.
