Here's my folk / slow jazz list:

Charles Mingus - Theme for Lester Young
Tom Waits - Take It With Me
Bert Jansch - Black Swan
Hank Dogs - Sun Explodes
Peter Gabriel - I Grieve
Willard Grant - Notes from the Waiting Room
joe Henry - Flesh and Blood
Neil Young - Sugar Mountain
Bill Frisell - Blues Dream
Israel Kamakawiwo - Somewhere over the rainbow / It's a wonderful world

A playlist like this is what I'd want for myself.

Personally, I'd stay away from the really sad songs. The person died young so I imagine it'll be a tough one for people to get through to begin with.

I'm not recommending "Celebration Time" or anything like that, but I think playing extremely sad songs like some of the ones mentioned above could make it even more difficult for the family/friends. I'd opt for some songs that are more moderate.

Bruce Springsteen - You're Missing.
Beautiful song, and it's not overly sad. Very nice.

I've heard Let It Be by The Beatles played at funerals two or three times, and it always seems appropriate. Funeral music is such a personal thing though. It really depends on the deceased and the family.

i hate to sound like a jerk in a serious thread, but i wanna play navras at my funeral (the music that plays right before the flames skate out during the playoffs)

im irish so its gonna be epic not solemn.

as for your friend i might play any of a few songs off disc 2 of the foo fighters in you honor, also "a warm place" off the downward spiral by NIN is kinda pretty. or adrift and at peace by NIN. not the greatest uplifting songs but they are more beautiful type instrumentals.

depends on how young or old your friend is, if you want current stuff or classics.

Going along with the idea of playing songs that aren't too depressing, I would definitly recommen "rooftops" by the lost prophets. The lyrics are absolutley perfect for someone who has died too young. Here's some of the lyrics....

When our time is up
When our lives are done
Will we say we've had our fun?

Will we make a mark this time?
Will we always say we tried?

Standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out.
Standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out.
Standing on the rooftops
Everybody scream your heart out.
This is all we got now
Everybody scream your heart out.

All the love I've met
I have no regrets
If it all ends now, I'm set

Will we make a mark this time?
Will we always say we tried?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjfQ2YO2I3Q , here's a great video made by a senators fan after the '07 cup run, dedicated to elgin fraser, using this song.

Seconded. Glad you posted it first, though, so I didn't have to look up his name. Perfect song, though.

Someone suggested "I will remember you", good choice. It was played at my Uncles funeral, and to this day I cannot listen to that song.

Si... Too bad about the story behind that one tho.

Anyway, was the guy a bit of a joker? If so, crank out some Gordon Lightfoot, in the form of That's What You Get For Loving Me:

That's what you get for loving me
That's what you get for loving me
Well everything you had is gone, as you can see
That's what you get for loving me

I ain't the kind to hang around
With every new love that I've found
Moving is my stock in trade I'm moving on,
I won't think of you when I'm gone

So don't you shed a tear for me
I ain't the love you thought I'd be
I've had a hundred more like you, so don't be blue
I'll have a thousand 'fore I'm thru

Now, there you go, You're crying again
Now there you go, you're crying again
Well some day when your poor heart is on the mend
I just might pass this way again

That's what you get for loving me
That's what you get for loving me
Well everything you had is gone, as you can see
That's what you get for loving me.

Of course, it may be totally inappropriate. In which case, I apologize in advance.

I'm sure that this song would go over well at Fotze's funeral, however. (KOW)
