"Don't draft me because I will only play for the Calgary Flames".

"Life of Russian hockey veterans is very hard," said Soviet hockey star Sergei Makarov. "Most of them don't have enough to eat these days. These old players are Russian legends."
While discussing how the draft unfolded, Burke made it clear that he wasn't going to take Yakupov, even if the Russian winger fell into his lap.
"We weren't going to take him. His draft interview was the worst interview I've ever had in my life. Terrible," Burke said on Monday's episode of the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast.
When asked why the interview went so poorly, Burke did not hold back.
"He was defiant, obnoxious, and sullen," he continued. "John Lilley, one of our scouts ... almost fought him in the interview, so it was not a good interview."
Cootes highlight package. He doesn't scream third liner to me with his hands and shot. He looks very comfortable being offensively creative. I'd be quite happy if the Flames drafted him.

Ya I could see him exploding in his D+1 year. Wouldn’t mind him at all at 18.
I’m telling ya, the only reason Cootes’ stats hovered around a ppg, is the team he played for, and his unwavering commitment to playing a spotless defensive game. On another team, I think he might be considered a potential top-10 pick, along with Martin.

So sandman after hearing Ryabkin did poorly at the combine, are we off the Ryabkin train for our first round picks?
I’m not as high on him as some others are, so even without the combine results (which don’t surprise me the least bit), I would be trepidatious in taking him- at least with a first-rounder. When I watch him, I sometimes see a kid who is playing the game that HE wants to play, and I have difficulty at times seeing a player who will ever have the commitment or mindset to make the NHL. Just my opinion, and I could be wrong, of course. Some team will still take him in the top-25 anyway, maybe even top-20- I just hope it’s not our team. Top talent, though.

Is it wrong that I'd rather have Cootes and Zonnon than Bear?
Might I suggest that it may be because so much of his game revolves around his high-end work-ethic, that you wonder how it might translate to a league where everyone works hard, and is bigger than him?
It’s in the back of my mind….

Damn Sandman - now I am going to be disappointed if we don’t get him. I have him and Reschney as my top (realistic) choices for 18… I was originally hoping we would have 18 and 22 and could somehow get both.
Do you think we will get our choice of Cootes and Reschney at 18?

Here is the million dollar question, would you trade 18 for Rossi? Providing someone unexpected doesn't slide to 18 I think I would. Your odds of getting a player as impactful as Rossi at 18 are pretty remote.
Easily, but I think it costs more. Cost in futures would probably be similar to what we paid for Dougie.
Chances of us getting a Rossi caliber player at 18 feel pretty slim.

I believe so, but I could also see both guys rising in a draft like this one. That would be a tough choice indeed.

I’m surprised Kindel isn’t ranked higher on consensus draft boards. To the eye test, he seems like he’s got speed and a shot than most don’t have for what may be available in our first pick range. The position he plays is the only knock to me where I’d prefer a centre but to me he looks like a lot higher upside than a lot of others in that mid round range. What am I missing?

Kindel played a combo of C/RW this year, too, so it's not like C is out of the question. I heard in some podcasts that he primarily played C when he was drafted into the WHL. I guess the question is whether scouts project Kindel as a C at the NHL level.
I agree with you though, Kindel has the hockey IQ and skills to be picked much higher than where he's currently ranked. 99pts in a D+0 year is nothing to sneeze at.

Option A) Cootes and Gastrin
Option B) Rescheny and Zonnon
If those are my only two options, and I had a gun to my head, I would go Reschny-Zonnon, as I believe Reschny and Cootes are close, but I would put Zonnon ahead of Gastrin- especially in offensive ceiling.
