Probably forces them to split up 97 and 29. They’ve mostly played together in this series.
RNH is underwhelming at evens but is a good special teams player for them, and with him and Hyman out it means more minutes for Kane and Perry. Depth starts to get quite thin after that.

That's not Edmonton's or McDavid's problem.
The issue is that the finals don't involve teams from the markets where they care about hockey in US. Add that with being a repeat of last year.
And it's not just an NHL problem.

Predictably, the national TV audience for Game 1 wasn’t commensurate with the sheer entertainment value on display. (There’s no accounting for taste.) Per Nielsen, ABC’s broadcast served up an average audience of 8.91 million viewers, down 19% from the analogous Mavericks-Celtics game in 2024 (10.99 million), while earning the dubious distinction of being the least-watched NBA Finals opener this side of the pandemic-blighted series in 2020 and 2021. (Prior to Thursday’s broadcast, the lowest delivery for a regularly-scheduled Game 1 was the 9.21 million viewers ABC managed with the 2007 Spurs-Cavaliers title tilt, a quick four-night set that remains the least-watched complete NBA Finals on record.)

Finals involving teams that aren't from big US markets for their respective leagues aren't gonna be big draws. Water is also wet.

I think Hockey is growing in the states. The report specifically said it was because of Edmonton lol.
LeBron James played got Cleveland and drew ratings. You need a star you can market.

They won't split up 97 and 29. Even if they tried it to start the game they are always back together by the middle of the first or if they get down a goal.

They screwed up starting early so they had to give up Wednesday. NBA finals on Wednesday and Friday.

Really dumb. People who casually might have watched will forget about hockey, this is dragging too long. Rather have them play back-to-back then have a two day break twice.

Imagine making us wait a week to watch the finals, then make us wait 2 days in between games. It’s no wonder the ratings are down.

They did the same thing last year. I think a lot of people, even those that were a little more dialed in than casual fans, just wanted it to end.

There needs to be time between games for the Moss pit fans to get out of jail or the hospital.

Do they seriously not play tonight? How many days off?!
I see Nugent Hopkins is a game time decision.

It’s been 1-2-1-2-2 for days off. The NHL had a fixed schedule they moved away from to start the series early so now they are playing second fiddle to the NBA.

Heard the same. How many excuses does a team need ? Flames were missing players in 04 too but we didnt make excuses
Missing McCammond , Gauthier, Lydman, off the top of my head. I know there were more but we werent feeling sorry for ourselves. And just playing the victim for fhe whole playoffs.
Hardest path to a cup ill ever remember. It was in. The league knows it.

Reinprecht for all of the playoffs and Lombardi after the second round as well. I think Lydman came back for a few games in the finals.

This is why the notion that the League is helping the Oilers is so ridiculous, McDavid has zero impact in America.
