I friggin hope to god we finish dead last this year and get to draft McKenna, then this entire franchise would actually have something to base itself around and look forward to.

I went to that game where they closed them out. Down 3-0, comeback win, the Miller chants, ended with me high fiving Conroy and Burke as they came out the press tunnel.
Probably not great for most Flames fans, but its second best Flames game ever attended just behind 04 beating the Sharks to SCF.
I’ll take it.

They certainly have the talent, but it hasn't even come close to getting traction from a team perspective and it's hard to say if it will any time soon.
Always a gamble to take...
Personally I prefer acquiring all the unprotected firsts you can get and then either hoping they're a lottery ticket or using multiple firsts to move up to draft an impact player.
I think the Flames current approach is perfect and we seriously need to exercise some patience and give it a chance to pan to bear fruit which takes time.
|
Exactly. But that’s not how some people operate. The Flames aren’t the best already so they never will be and let’s drool over the Oilers instead. Gross.
These are the same types that turned on Tkachuk, Gaudreau, Monahan, and Bennett, so it’s not just because they feel the team isn’t building correctly or doesn’t have star players. When we did, they complained about those guys too. And when Parekh makes mistakes or says the wrong thing they’ll complain about him. Or advocate trading Wolf (already happening). Or god forbid we get a top line center and he’s a little more Hischier and a little less McDavid, or has a second season like Bedard.
They want perfection and they want it now, so they can always have something to complain about.

What is the current approach? Hang on to veterans because it feels good? Try and squeak into the last playoff spot because "culture" or something? Make oblique statements about trying to acquire centres under 25 (EVERYONE IS TRYING TO DO THIS AT ALL TIMES)?
The approach is to float on, not sure how anyone can describe that as perfect.

I want the opposite of perfection. Crash and burn. Rebuild this team around high picks you acquire and fill in the gaps with good late round drafting and saavy development. We are building it backwards and it won't ever work this way in today's NHL.

I grew up with Sharks fans and still know plenty, and the sentiment down there isn’t overly positive, and fans aren’t having much fun.
I don’t mind people advocating for a decade of misery on the hope it turns into 3-5 years of joy. But let’s not sugar coat it and pretend it’s anything but misery and that the people who are miserable now would be just as or even more miserable then. It sucks. Is it worth it? It can be. But it sucks. Even with a 1st overall pick.

By who's definition? Yours?
At least acknowledge that you are trying to place value on something that can only be subjective to you.
For me, I align much closer with that article that you and Jiri were so happy to smash on, but I thought C4L had the most cogent take on. I, personally, rank my entertainment of the team based on cup chances. This is split into two groups: Active cup chance and future hope for cup chance based on development/acquisition of star players.
The Flames have, historically and recently, been the worst franchise in the league at these things. I didn't find this season entertaining at all, I found it an utter waste.

The Sharks’ season ticket renewal rate this summer was the highest since 2016 (the summer after they went to the final). People don’t flock to arenas to watch their team get blown out when they’re at the bottom of the standings. But elite prospects inspire long-term hope.

No Cliff, statistics are the enemy of "knowing lots of sharks fans"!

Surely if you post about it all the time in every thread management and ownership will notice and do exactly as you want. The more snarky your comments the better.

Groin injuries take a long time to heal. Tkachuk is not going to be 100 per cent until he’s had the summer to recuperate.

How patient?
like lets do the math.
We're 3 years out of playoffs right now.
I don't think we're even remotely close to being a serious contender. We don't even have a potential top center in the system yet.
Once we have that player you can tack on 5 years of development. Most serious competitors aren't that way until their core skaters are in the 25-30 year old range.
So to me we're atleast 5 years out. And that's if things go right and we hit on a later pick.

In the last two years the Flames have moved 3 of their top 5 forwards, 3 of their top 5 defencemen (about to be 4), and their starting goaltender. From the veteran forwards remaining, two are on the block, one has an immovable contract, and the other has a no move clause which he’s made clear he’ll use.
Describing this as “hanging on to veterans because it feels good” isn’t based on reality.

And people are already complaining that it’s not fast enough and not being done correctly.
So yeah, patience. We’re going to need a bunch more than we’re showing if people want to rebuild the rebuild two years in.

We literally did that with Rasmus Andersson. Kept him this season because we were focused on rewarding guys in the room and going on a run.
It was a stupid, mindless decision that shows the organization remains rudderless.

Better than management or ownership reading drivel about "being ok if the club never wins a cup again in my lifetime" or whatever the tree posted about.

How do you draw that line? I think most of the people who are frustrated with the approach are the same ones that thought those 3 players were mishandled at various points.
Having said that, that rests with the previous GM and I have more faith in Conroy's current approach and if I were to guess, I think he thought they were going to be drafting top 10 again this year. With the emergence of Wolf, that plan may have to shift now.
I also think there are a lot of people willing to be patient. Everyone who advocates for lottery picks knows it will take several years to build from that point. They don't want instant perfection, they just want to know that the plan is to get there.

Show your work here though, I am interested!
The goalie comment is laughable. We all knew what we had in Marky wasn't a cup winning goalie after we watched him crumple against the oilers. Trading him was an absolute necessity.
Which forwards are you talking about? Lindholm? Toffoli? Mangiapane?
Reports are that we tried everything to sign Lindy, so that wasn't a choice.
I suppose you can have Toffoli but describing Mangiapane as a top forward is also a choice.
Dmen- Hanifin also indicated he wouldn't re-sign in Calgary, so more of a forced hand than active choice. Again, heavy rumors that we wanted to re-sign him and offered a lot. Tanev asked for a cup chance and it was given to him. Is Zadorov the other player you're talking about here? Again, LOL.
I think this is attempting to hang on to veterans and failing, mixed with some reasonable moving on of questionable assets.

Backlund, Coleman, Andersson- you trade any of those 3 in season and you add some losses. Trade more than 1 and I think we are drafting top 10 this year. But we kept them because it felt good.
