There's so much smoke around Necas wanting to test free agency, on both teams, that it feels it's more than him simply wanting to play centre.
Does he want to play centre purely because he likes the position, or does he want to do it because he wants to get paid $10m+ a year?
Lots of risk there without getting a detailed understanding from his agent.

Maybe so. But Klapka brings elements to his game that this undersized forward group lacks. We don’t really have anything like him in the system either. And once guys with his size and bite do establish themselves as 15-20 goal, 40 pt guys, they’re very difficult to acquire.

I'm no draft aficionado but this does seem to me like the type of draft where you take those two first rounders and trade them to take a shot at McQueen. Yeah he has injury risk but it's high upside and not that big a loss given the draft class.

For sure some risk, especially if you do the deal without an extension in place, but even without i'm not sure the risk is too great. If Necas decides he wants a full year at center to show the NHL what he is capable of, and he has a great year with the Flames, they can always trade him again at the deadline.
If the Flames are moving on from Andersson anyway, they probably dont end up in much of a different situation, unless of course there is a better deal to be had with Andersson for draft picks either before or after this coming draft.

I’m sure Conroy will be active looking for another centre with potential top six upside (Necas/Mercer/Rossi) but I think I’d rather just go with Kadri-Zary-Frost-Backlund this year. Zary has shown solid progression for 2 straight years in the NHL and looked great at centre last year. If it works out and Zary turns into a legit 2nd line center - great! Found the solution internally. If it doesn’t work out and the team struggles - great! It’s a good year to have a high pick.
I’m fine getting another young centre that will be signed for long term if it doesn’t cost any of the young players in the system but I’m not sure that’s realistic.

Assuming an extension is possible with necas. And necas could play center. what about a late 1st and zary for necas deal.

Even if you view him as a winger it may still be worth it.
Necas would improve our powerplay drastically. He also provides some much needed skill and speed.
I would try and keep Zary though and try and throw together a different package.

I don't see Colorado being overly excited about the 1st. If anything, we should get Rasmus in there and keep the pick.

Sure but for the same reason those picks also have less trade value to try and move up.

Brock Nelson signs in Colorado 3 years 7.5 AAV. Ugly.

Agreed, organizational depth at center is lacking
My guess they add a couple centers, not just with the Flames likely with AHL as well,

Seems fine to me. He's a year younger than Kadri and it's a year shorter then what's left on Kadri's deal and only $500K more after a couple years of rising cap, although Kadri is a better overall player at a premium postion.
Not a good deal; but probably not a bad deal, as he brings a lot beyond scoring.
Kind of just makes me annoyed about the return Kadri could have generated from the Avs, especially if he starts slowing down in a couple years.

That Brock Nelson contract is awful.
They may as well have just paid Rantanen whatever he wanted. He is worth at least 2 Brock Nelson's.

Still, they cheaped out on Kadri...lost two of his and the teams really good years and then spent assets to aquire Nelson and sign him for more money.
Pretty poor by the Avs, 2 first round losses to show for it. And yeah there goes over half the Rantanen savings while pissing off your top players.

Yeah. Obviously there can be tough cap decisions to make but they have seemed to be too quick to move on from players that made that team into an absolute monster. It seems they really could have kept that team together to this day - even with the raises to Rantanen, MacKinnnon and Kadri.

I'm more on board with this through process myself, strictly due to the acquisition cost it would take to land either of these 3.
I think we're better using assets to get picks/prospects rather than burning ours on guys this year.

Exactly. Keep it simple. Andersson and Coleman for picks/prospects and develop from within. Makes room for young players like Zary, Coronato, Klapka and Parekh to play bigger roles on the team.

Anyone shocked at that contract hasn't looked at the numbers Nelson has put up the last four seasons.

A third of the teams in the league are shopping for a #2C this summer, and the Avs didn’t want to get stuck without one when the music stopped. They liked Nelson enough a couple months ago that they paid a steep price for him, and I guess what they saw of him in an Avs uniform didn’t change their mind.

That would be a shame if some of the Avs top players started getting annoyed with the organization, cough MAKAR
