Wheeler’s final ranking is out. Only centres he has making it to the #13-20 tier are Reschny and Potter. FWIW, he has Kindel and Cootes in the next tier.

Take Resch if he is there at 18. If he isn't though I would rather swing for a homerun type gamble like Kindel being able to play C it even Ryabkin. Picking Cootes would be so past Calgary Flames, hey let's pick the safe pick NHL player even if his ceiling is 3C.

I dont get this at all.
Kindel is 5 10 ? And a winger? I dont see how he has more runway than cootes possibly being a top six not to mention at 5 10 he would be hardpressed just to make the nhl because he is probably top six or bust. Misa is an equal or better prospect i dont see him being a center either at 5 10.
Ryabkin other than his previous year what has he done to warrant first round selection? He isnt even the best player on his team?
Moore has high end skill but massive attitude problems and riker lee has a top ten skillset but skates like a toddler would be a far smarter choice because we know we can improve skating, attitude not so much.
The Quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little, and it will fail, to the ruin of all. Yet hope remains while the Company is true. Go Flames Go!

I agree on the homerun pick, Cootes is projected to be 3rd line C, which isn't a priority. Reschny is the only one in our range that I could foresee having a top six floor.
Meanwhile, there are a number of maybes ranked in the 20s.
Ryabkin, Nesbitt, West, Kindel, Lee, Potter, Zonnon, Benak (the last 5 players will likely be wingers if they make it).
If Reschny isn't available, I would see if there is an opportunity to trade down and get an extra swing.
Trade 18 to CLB for picks 20 & a 2026 2nd
Trade 18 to PHI for picks 22 & 36
Trade 18 to NSH for picks 23 & 35
Trade 18 to SJ for picks 30 & 33
As it stands we are likely to leave the draft with Cootes & Zonnon
If we are strategic, we could leave with Rybakin, Zonnon & West

How are you already going to label Cootes as a ceiling of 3C? Yes, Kindel may have a slightly higher ceiling, but Cootes has a better floor and imo would be a great center to eventually replace Backlund as a responsible 2-way player. You win cups with 2-way players.

Coming into the season, I had such high hopes for Ryabkin and I've soured on the kid so much as the season progressed....BUT...
I hope the Flames draft him regardless and I will be stoked if they do. With their draft positioning outside of the Top 10, these are the type of prospects that they have to try and hit a home run with. I have full faith in our development team to sort this kid out and provide him a great opportunity to become what he is capable of becoming-- an elite player. We need raw elite talent in our draft pool and as much of it as we can get.

The answer to both of these is raw talent.
Ryabkin has the potential to be a star player and would probably be towards the top of our prospect depth chart immediately.

I think it's just the nature of the beast. The prospects projected to be top 6 centers will likely be gone. By the time #18 rolls around in a typical draft, you are looking at middle 6 projection at best. It's why I wouldn't focus on centers outside of the top 10. There is no point in passing over a defenseman or winger at that point. We should just be going for highest upside period since a significant number don't even make it at that point.

Cootes showed more of what he can do at the U-18’s, when away from the Thunderbirds, who were a poor team, and languished in the WHL basement for most of the season. Cootes can be more than just a 3C- remember Mike Richards?

I honestly don’t know why a player would pick the CHL over the NCAA if given the choice. Free education and legitimate money in your pocket seems pretty good.
