The way I look at it this is exactly why they will not change the format because facing the Kings in the first round guarantee the league's darling easy advance to second round.

Robertson showed up this series, but otherwise I agree. Where was Jamie Benn this series? For a gritty captain he seems to have no heart, I don't even remember hearing his name called. That may have been his last shot at winning the Cup.

They didn't beat Dallas all year and they only won a game the end of the year when Vegas was already a playoff lock. They aren't winning a series scoring the 4th lowest goal total in the league against any of these teams, just because they had a hot streak.

No one on Dallas really showed up this series
Benn
Robertson
Duchene
Seguin
Johnston
Granlund
Rantanen
A couple of them showed up in the other series. But ghosts against the Oilers.

LA down in 6, Vegas and Dallas in 5. Don’t think I’m being delusional to think the Flames, who were essentially in playoff mode for a month or more, would have put up a better fight against EDM than any of those three and could have taken the series the distance and maybe even won.
EDM has had the easiest path to the Finals in recent memory. Their players all but admitted it without actually saying it.

If Dallas retools in the next couple of years I'd love to somehow pluck Robertson out of there. He's a gamer.

Yeah it's getting a bit dull with the same playoff match ups every year. At least with 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7 etc you got more variety.

I think its debatable if the Flames would have even made it past the Jets in rnd 1 or Dallas in rnd 2 to even get a chance at the Oilers. The Flames pretty much all year needed to rely on teams scoring less than 3 goals to win. St Louis was almost 4 goals per game in the PO and still lost to the Jets but its debatable since Helly cant seem to ever play well in the PO.
Dallas seemed to give the Oilers way more time and space due to their speed and not wanting to get beat or take a bad penalty. I don't see Dallas giving the Flames the same kind of respect, so I don't see the Flames exposing Oettinger, nor do the Flames have the same kind of offensive weapons lets be honest. They didn't win a game all year against Dallas.
Last time the Flames went against the Oil they got rocked so if they did some how make it to rnd 3, I'm not sure outside of Wolf that this roster is better than the one we had that season.. the Oil are better than they were that season based on the numbers so I think its doubtful the Flames beat them. If you just mean giving them more trouble as in throwing more hits, getting more grimy and maybe going out in 6, sure. I don't see this roster winning the series though.

Well, we will never know. But the Flames record against Edmonton this year was 1-1-1 and I also agree with the thesis that the Flames would have shown more heart than LA, VGK and DAL did against the Oilers. There's no question scoring (and 3-on-3 play, irrelevant in the playoffs) were the Flames' biggest weaknesses this year so it's certainly fair to surmise they might not have won a hypothetical matchup with Edmonton. But I think they would have at least shown up.

Iginla deserved a cup. Thornton too. Lots of players deserving, but fate, teammates, lady luck, or GM let them down. Likewise, lots of players win but are largely non-deserving passengers.
