In my experience with vinyl siding, you get what you pay for. Light colored vinyl siding is very basic in terms of what goes into it. Fading can definitely be a problem. Dark colored vinyl has heat reflective pigments and uv protection built in to slow the fade. Costs about double to go with the dark colors though and at that price point it is getting closer in cost to Hardie. If the $ was equal, a fiber cement product is probably the smart choice in our area for sure.

Having done a fair bit of research into this for my build, there is a noticeable difference in outcomes between getting hardie from the factory already painted and baked in one of their admittedly limited factory colours, and getting it painted after delivery in whatever colour you like. If you do the factory colours, it seems like the median outcome is "it's a bit faded after 10+ years but still totally fine, you wouldn't notice unless you had an old photo to compare it to", at which point you can repaint it all pretty easily if that bothers you. In shadier or cloudier areas there are lots of "it's 15 years old and looks identical to the day it was installed" reviews, too, but that's obviously not Calgary conditions.

Other great options for Calgary are Canexel and LP manufactured wood based siding. My neighbour has Canexel and mien is LP, both look great. The Canexel is over 15 years old.
