This was proposed in 2008 then scrapped due to public outcry.
This is an intriguing idea. Its batcrap nuts, but intriguing none the less.

Let me go out on a limb and say that a man came up with this plan.

Sounds like severe thunderstorm / hail possible late afternoon / evening today? God, I hope not. I just got my house finally fixed up a couple months ago, and now my deductible is $10K due to the claim.

Did... did you just replace vinyl with vinyl?

We endured how many cold, overcast, rainy days the past couple weeks only to get one beautiful day yesterday and now we get loonie-sized hail this evening when it’s supposed to be 26°C? Ugh.

Coldest May on record here since 1967, just an awful spring thus far. Just through a stretch with these highs on May 21-25!!! 11-11-10-14-16

Crazy!

I get that Hardie has a higher upfront cost but over the long run its gotta end up way cheaper than the constant repairs for vinyl.

Does Hardie need up keep? IE: painting, if not how fade resistant is it?

Vinyl fades like crazy

I did, yes. First hail claim in 15 years of owning my house. I did think about hardie board, but when I asked my appraiser if this would lower my insurance deductible, they said no (only mentioned a better roof material would give a discount), so figured no point spending the premium prices. Plus, I only had two sides of my house replaced, as the other two sides were not damaged.

It's pretty awesome. I'm sure there is some fading there, because it sits out in the elements, which must have an effect. But, between the hail, woodpeckers, and other potential issues, it's very durable.

Definitely better than vinyl; best guess would be hardie in direct sun still lasts a good decade before it starts becoming noticeable. Can also add a UV-resistant finish to it too I think

I think most of danger is further north. Red deer to Edmonton.

Yah, sounds like we're at the edge of it in Calgary, so hopefully it's just rain and not any significant hail sizes.

I get that part of it for sure. Although after 15 years it might have been worthwhile to just redo the whole thing anyway... peace of mind etc. Especially since it seems like these storms are likely to get worse over time.

Yeah and if your deductible is $10k (!) and you know for certain another storm will just wreck your siding again, I'd think it's way better to have just bitten the bullet and bought something that is better so this isn't an ongoing situation in your life.

Having said that, budget is king. If it wasn't affordable to upgrade, then vinyl it is and I wouldn't blame you one bit.

I'm pretty sure the Hardie board warranty doesn't apply to (excessive) fade after just 3 years. It is certainly a more robust panel than vinyl siding but fade can be an issue.

Weather gods are angry at the Oilers. Can't blame them.
