Definitely. Peterka is worth more than Byram, IMO. That is a very different trade, and we likely have to add.

How do you project Byram?
I project him as a potential #1 dman. offensive but also gives you 28mins a game if needed. the more minutes he plays the better he is.

Some might be underrating Peterka’s value- he’s 23, and managed to put up 68 points in 77 games on a poor team, with little offensive help.

Just read an article that mentioned Peterka had the worst defensive metrics (or xGA/60 and actual GA/60 at least) of any Forward on Buffalo this season. oof.

Peterka and Byram will likely eat up $15M of cap space and would cost several assets to acquire. Flames are not there yet. They should be picky and strategic with their adds this summer as I think last year was more of a blip than a sign of things to come.

If you are trading with Buffalo basically it has to be someone in RFA age range and with no trade protection. That takes Rasmus off the table.

I would throw an offer at them centered on Pospisil + Florida pick for Peterka.

Buffalo does weird things. Maybe it works.

FWIW Seravalli believes Peterka has soured on the organization and they may have no choice but to trade him.

I like Peterka as well but his top linemate was Tage Thompson and he led Buffalo forwards in PP ice time on a PP that has Thompson and Dahlin. Tough to say he didn't get a chance to play with good players.

Flames and Sabres are not great trade partners and it is why we don’t have Cozens on our team either.
A long time ago someone posted stuff about Byram's off ice character, like back when he was still new in the league. I can't recall exactly what they said, nor can I find the post now, but I remember thinking he was someone to stay away from.

Royle also said that Buffalo is not looking for picks or prospects. If the Flames could land these 2 and not give up a ton in picks, why not? Both could be worth that money with a rising cap.

I like the Flames d prospects, but really who do we have that is a lock to make the NHL other than Parekh. Some nice prospects but not all will turn out to be players and some are pretty young to assume they make it in the next year or 2.

Trading Rasmus puts this team in a hole on d. Adding Byram give us a top 4 with Parekh and Byram with big upside to go with Weegar and Bahl.

If our other prospects start to push to make it, Weegar might be next to move. But I don't see that happening in the next 2 years. At least pushing guys out of the top 4. Bahl could also be a bottom pairing guy on a contending team as well.

Well, there's options for Conroy to make some moves if he wants to.

I mean ultimately everything the Flames are going to do hinges on addressing the Andersson situation first and foremost. I suspect we will hear something on that front in the next couple of weeks.

Doubt Buffalo is in play on that front.

I don't mind the idea of Byram but I do mind the competition to acquire him this making it a pricey endeavour to try and make happen. Honestly don't know enough about Peterka to be keen on him or not outside of the fact the Flames have assets to maybe acquire one good piece and shouldn't that piece be a Center?

In a world of finite resources the Flames are going to have to spend smartly.

I don't know. LHD and C are top of the Flames list followed by another RHS FW but I don't know if Peterka warrants being a priority over the other two positions.

I don't think the Flames and Sabres are good trade partners. The Flames don't have what the Sabres need. If they did, Cozens would be a Flame.

Which is frustrating, because they have what we need.

I feel the same way about the Wild.

That's 2 1sts + 2nd for a guy who two teams have given up on, seems selfish, and would instantly become our highest paid defenseman, without playing a game. He isn't as good as Andersson (though yes, he is younger), and you want to throw in Zary?

No.
The 1sts would not be early 1sts. I doubt either gets us a pick in the top 15 unless we luck out and get an unprotected 1st and that team tanks at the right time.

At some point the Flames need quality.

Huberdeau is here to stay for now. Coronato is as well. I like Zary more than Sharangovich, but his trade value would be higher, and I like keeping Sharangovich as he brings a big league shot and he is good on the PK.

Having 15 young wingers with potential doesn't always result in a high-end top 4 at wing. Zary is not going to be a 1st line winger or someone who excels on the PP/. I see him as maybe a good PK winger who brings energy. But he isn't very physical and has injury concerns.

Buffalo needs to get nastier.

Pospisil would be someone they’d definitely listen to. We need more skill, and I think Buffalo is more than willing to trade skill for physicality and two way play like they did with the Savoie/McLeod deal. I like the FLA pick and Pospisil idea for Peterka.

If Byram isn’t an ideal fit, I do wonder if we could snag Guhle from Montreal for Andersson 1 for 1. Guhle signed a long term deal already, and in my eyes is a perfect 2/3 defenseman. Andersson would play well with Matheson or Hutson.

You might be right on Hanifin comparison, but there is a chance that you aren't as well.

Byram was a 23-year-old last year and played 23 mins a night on the top unit. I think he can evolve into a top dman more so than Zary will evolve into anything more than maybe 2nd line winger. I see a very good chance of him being a 3rd liner.

Rasmus could get us a 1st, but I do like our depth at prospect. Need quality and odds are if the young player is already proven, he isn't available for Zary and Rasmus.

Why wouldn't they play Guhle with Hutson or Matheson? He seems like a great fit for that role and signed long term for way less than Rasmus wants.

Agreed. This feels like a rush the rebuild trade scenario. The Flames need to build more of their asset base before looking to make moves like this IMHO.

I'd prefer not dealing with the Habs for a long while.

I’d be happy with Pospisil and 32nd OA for 9th OA too. I like Pospisil but I like Klapka more.
