Sounds like a typical European coach to me. "Oh, you were drafted by an NHL team? Enjoy the press box."

I've literally never heard of that happening.
In Finland every organization is extremely openly proud whenever they produce an NHL draft pick, despite it always being a little bittersweet.
Most Finnish NHL players who end their careers in Europe also go back to okay for their original team.

Agreed, I have zero faith in Pennanen currently.
That said, he stepped into impossibly large boots, and I have some hope that maybe he'll smarten up once the jitters are out. But my expectation is that right now he is basically keeping the seat warm for Raipe. (Both have contracts that end after next season.)

Nice to see someone here has watched some hockey.
If every team in the NHL made the playoffs, and it was a 1 game series, you'd be shocked sometimes who would win the cup.
A 7 game series is crap shoot enough, but a single game?
It's why these single game knock outs at world competitions brings many surprises.

Happens with Russia all the time, I think. They definitely prefer guys for the national teams who play in the Russian leagues. Obviously the really good NHLers will still play, but they always seem to find room for KHL guys.

what a game. First quarterfinals since 1994, and the boys did it without Rossi and Reinbacher. Super happy for this group.

Canada could sure use a regulation win today vs. Sweden, otherwise they're looking at a QF game vs. USA.
I'd much rather see them play Denmark or Germany.

interesting results this tournament, France and Kazakhstan are relegated. Kazakhstan ends a run of 5 years and France are down for the first time since 2007!

Americans up 3-2 on Czechia, no Vladar in net. This is the first time watching the Czechs and I swear they have a toddler playing for them. #86.

It appears as though there’s an odd wrinkle this year though. If Sweden and Denmark both make the quarters and are slated to play each other (which would be the case if both win later today), the crossover for the quarters will not occur (in order for both teams to host their QF). The teams would stay within the group ( A1 vs A4; A2 vs A3; etc) for just the QF round.
https://www.iihf.com/en/events/2025/...ournament_info
It would be a moot point if Germany beats Denmark or if Canada beats Sweden.

I didn't do pro players in general because I wasn't that bored, but I assume more Finnish players than Canadian players opt to play in Europe rather than playing low on the depth chart in the NHL.
No point really, also, I don't always math well so if anyone fact checks that and I was off, feel free to roast me.
Isn't it also true that Finland and Canada are the only 2 countries where hockey is the number 1 sport? I recall hearing that even in places like Sweden, Russia, and Czechia, soccer beats hockey in popularity.

That’s interesting. Where did the U.S. rank? What others ranked high?

Elias Lindholm with a great play shorthanded to get a breakaway to bury it!
Foerster with a great power move to get around Elias Pettersson and Markstrom to put Canada back up 2-1.
