Yeah…That’s also putting every athlete in a very small box…

As a born and raised Calgarian, I’ve lived in three other Canadian cities, 3-4 years each in my young adulthood. I can tell you from experience Calgary is viewed no differently than those other Cities by those who were born and raised there. It’s fine, but it’s certainly not seen as this beacon of light. In fact, I’d say the perception by many leans the opposite way.
NHLers are no different. If you’re born and raised in BC, Ontario, the Maritimes or Quebec, there probably a better than 50% chance Calgary carries no greater attraction than, say, Minnesota or St.Louis or take your pick.
Calgary is a fine City and I’ve chosen to return here but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. And that’s fine. I remember meeting a girl once in Banff who wanted to go back to Winnipeg and as a smug Calgarian I asked ‘why’? (I was young at the time). The reality of it though is every city has its attractive qualities and being born and raised in a certain location, in most instances, probably leaves a lasting impression on o es outlook.

Ryan pike had an article on the Seth Jones trade as a template for a Rasmus deal, which would be amazing.
Its too bad the Sabres are such an unattractive market because I vould see a similar deal there.
1st + Rasmus for kulich + 9th oa.
Detroit is another one where we could trade Rasmus get a young center and move up.
Or I wonder if the ducks are looking to build some more vets now
Zegras + 1st for 1st + Rasmus

One of the best features of calgary (for me atleast) is proximity to world class mountains.
But alot of NHLers can't even use those features that much. I don't think they're allowed to ski or mountain bike.

While I think Seth Jones stinks, obviously Florida did not.
But he was signed long term, I doubt Anderson waives for Buffalo, and even is he does, I doubt he signs long term with Buffalo. But giving up 9oa and Kulich? That I doubt.

They’re really only giving up kulich and 9 spots if that’s the deal. Not terrible, but doubt Ras would go there and sign

What about the Red Wings? They are in bad need of defence. Could we use Ras as a base for Kasper

I’m not sure what the attraction to Zegras is. He’s pretty far down the list in my opinion. He’ll, he’s not even on the list.
Listening to Stienberg, about seems to come up often, he’s consistently said Zegras has no interest in playing in Canada and, frankly, it sounds like that is reciprocated from the Flames point of view.

Well, there’s a reason small-market Canadian cities - as great as they are for middle-class people raising families - are on virtually every no-trade list in the NHL. There’s also a reason why hundreds of thousands of global rich who could live anywhere in the world have homes in New York, and zero have homes in Calgary.

There’s lots of reasons. Taxes are way up there on the list.
Individuals are individuals. Trying to guess exactly how individuals feel about all aspects of their life because of their age and occupation is dumb. Sure, there are norms.
Constantly asking why an athlete would want to live in Calgary is so annoying. You want to have takes on the team etc, sure. That stuff is all out there. Trying to guess how they want to live their lives off the ice is a waste of time.

I wonder if the Flames try and target Jonathan Toews this offseason. Could be a great veteran signing that they could have a handshake deal to flip him at the deadline if we aren't in contention to a contender? There definitely will be suiters for him to sign with but I wonder how big that list really is outside of teams looking to do the same as the Flames? Probably a long shot but that feels to me like a move the flames will be all over.

For a guy who hasn't played in 3 years, I dont think he'd be making a comeback.

There was an article last week that said he feels like he's past his issues with long COVID and wants to try to make a comeback.
My guess is he wants to play for a contender and ends up in Colorado though.

Have the small markets in Canada built amazing off ice facilities and treated their athletes like world class employees?
Then it's taxes.

Because it’s high risk of injury right? Is there an actual rule or an unspoken one? Genuinely curious

They're also usually fairly busy through the ski season

I don't think Kadri had great options. Wasn't it down to the Islanders and Flames and he chose Flames for the extra year on the deal? Maybe it was easier to stay in Canada as well if he had family already living here.
Regardless, I think age and overall talent will provide Marner with more options than Kadri had.
Calgary is a decent city overall but when you look at the top factors that typically matter to most players, Calgary doesn't check a lot of them. Obviously it may have unique appeal to players here and there but widely speaking I don't think Calgary is high on the majority of players top destinations. Seeing Bennett and Tkachuk talk about Florida it's night a day to Calgary in almost all aspects
