I would add the constant fawning and hype that our “independent” media heaps on them is just plain annoying and, given the results, unwarranted. With 3 Canadian teams having close affiliations with our national broadcaster, it leaves little room for the other 4 to get air.

For me, a big part of it is the lack of sportsmanship. "Dive, whine and punish them on the powerplay" was disgusting back when the Canucks did it...and the Coilers have taken it beyond that into an art form. That's not hockey, or any sort of hockey I have any interest in supporting.

Any time someone tells me I should cheer for Canadian teams (Oilers) when the Flames are out I ask them if Yankee and Red Sox fans cheer for the other team to support the US NE?

Hell, the Penguins and Flyers are from the same state and I'll bet no Flyers fan cheers for the Pens.

I once was at a White Sox game and saw a guy barely escape alive for wearing a Cubs shirt.

When a family member from San Diego asked me if I was cheering for the Oilers, I asked him if he cheers for the Dodgers when the Padres are done.

'Understood', he said.

Every really passionate fa understands rivalries - from every sport. It's just the casual or bandwagon fan that doesn't understand.

They are asking for examples and I'm telling them vague things about Perry, Kane, Mactavish, Katz etc..
Can you guys help me out with a list of the questionable moral characters of the oilers.. As soon as they see the rap sheet of all the players I'm sure they will switch to being fans of the flames.
Like a few others have already pointed out, why do you feel the need to justify your hatred of the Oilers? If those people can’t figure it out for themselves, then maybe they deserve to cheer for the Oilers.

That said, a few of the reasons I hate the Oilers:
- Kevin Lowe. From his attempt to make Mike Comrie pay back money before he would trade him to his “I know a thing or two about winning” arrogance, he is extremely unlikable. I know he is part if Oilers management, but he stands out even among the rest.
- Oilers management. From their willingness to hire the worst possible people (Kane, Perry, Bowman,…) to their treatment of players (Sheldon Souray, Comrie, Tobias Rieder,…), they truly reflect the detestable nature of their organization.
- Oilers players. They have had dirty players in the past, but the current group is particularly loathsome. Besides the aforementioned Perry and Kane, you have jerks like Nurse, who is quick to play the victim but has shown very little regard for others (crosscheck to head on Byfield, headbutt to Danault, suckerpunching Polak,…), and Draisaitl, who again tries to play the victim while being one of the dirtiest spearers, slewfooters and elbowers in the league. Add in the diving and embellishment that McDavid and Draisaitl (actually the entire team for that matter) insist on performing, they are truly deserving of the hate that all reasonable fans feel for them.

In terms of cheering for rivals. In 2011 I convinced myself to cheer for the Canucks as they were the canadian team. That was peak asshat Canucks with Kessler, Bieksa ect.

Lasted until Burrows bit that guy. I vowed that day to never do anything that foolish again.

Cheering for the Oilers would be top of that list.

The cheer for a Canadian thing is dumb. Most teams are made up of guys from a ton of different countries. Would never cheer for Oilers in any scenario.

Im all for putting some stuff aside for Olympics and world jrs., but NHL...never

Did the Pittsburgh Pirates fans cheer for the Philadelphia Phillies to win the WS the last time they play the Toronto Blue Jays? Cheer for the American team?

But before Hockey Canada gets any stupid ideas, I’d 100% cheer against Canada if they sent the entire oilers team D2 the mighty ducks style…

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. If there was a game with the invading aliens against the Oilers and the salvation of the world was on the line, I'd be cheering for the aliens.

I was at a conference last year during the playoffs and at a Moxie's by the airport area hotels. I couldn't believe the amount of Calgary people cheering for the Oilers and wearing Oilers gear, etc.

I was very loudly cheering against the Oilers and got dirty looks from a lot of people. I was so pissed off that an entire bar of Calgary people would cheer for the Oilers. Even the Manager was wearing a stupid oilers jersey I think.

Anyways, as mentioned there are 2 types of fans...all these chumps and me.

It's disgusting how many oilers fans come out of the woodwork in Calgary come playoff time and think they are the majority (to be fair, we need the flames to be in the playoffs to shut these idiots down). Last year half of my kid's lacrosse team wore oilers gear, so I made sure to laugh at them when the orange and blue *ssclowns lost to florida. The worst part is they think they are fine and at home. If I, for some godforsaken reason due to a downturn in my life and moral character, had to reside in that stinking northern s**thole of a city, and wore a flames jersey, I'd expect I'd have to be MMA trained and be prepared to fight off a bunch of clowns. Here, oilers fans think they are at home and everyone is cheering for their clown team. No. We are not. We Calgarians just realize your city is a dump, which is why you came here. It's sympathy. Take your oilers car flags/hats/jerseys and shove them right up your *ss.
