While your assessment is correct, you are assuming they would have beaten LA in a meaningful game. Right now they missed by 3 points.
And you are correct, and even next year, their current points of 94 could easily get them into a playoff spot.
They may be 4-5 players away from being a contending team, not a playoff team.

And the goal shouldn't just be to be a contender in a particular season. The goal should be to be a perennial contender for a sustained period of time.
This requires proper asset management and an age curve that actually makes sense.

The Athletic had serious potential at the beginning and at one point looked to be trending into the place to go for hockey news/articles. But then once they were bought out and had massive subscription numbers they slashed jobs to try to make more profit and that was the beginning of the end.

What is the better alternative?
I think it's good value. I think there is a lot of variability based on the authors. That's why I follow and consume content from certain ones, and I find there's enough value there to justify the low cost.
They are one of the few outlets that does actual investigative reporting. That is rapidly going away (in sports and otherwise)

You have to get pretty lucky all right. But there's a fair amount of PO teams with 1Cs not in the top 5. TB, Canes, Blues, Caps (their C was top 3 but not by them), Vegas (see Caps), Kings, Wild, Jets (barely).

Backlund might be traded after January 1, when his NMC converts to a limited NTC with a 15-team list. At that point it depends what kind of offers they get. They might just keep him and let him retire as a career Flame.
|
I’d say Backlund only gets traded if he wants to be moved or there is a first being offered, which is highly unlikely. If he doesn’t see a path to a cup next year and wants a chance to chase one, he should be moved to the team of his choice who is willing to take him. To me it wouldn’t matter if a 7th rounder was the return, he’s been a staple and deserves such treatment. If he doesn’t care about that chance I wouldn’t consider approaching him about a deal for less than a 1st, and I just don’t see that being a reality.
I’m with the crowd that is more future than present oriented at this point, but the commitment and character of Backlund makes him more than just a component or cog at this point.

The Athletic was running at a loss for years and would have been shuttered, laying off all of their employees, if they didn't make some changes. Their changes weren't about "more profit"; it was about remaining viable and able to continue to produce good content.
This eat the rich at all costs stuff drives me nuts, especially in the context of a struggling but incredibly important for democracy industry (I know it's just sports, but the industry in general is vital).
Athletic isn't perfect, and they're definitely lacking around Flames' content, but they provide some really informative journalism, great prospect content, and, for those that are into it, excellent fantasy sports analysis and tools.

Great comment. the idea that they are pocketing massive profits from the Athletic is just false.
And all of this is rapidly going away. The media serves an important role on society including as a check and balance. It's all vanishing.
We will miss it at some point.

I don't see a scenario where the Ducks don't match on McTavish at least for a 1st + 3rd, which is up to $6.8M AAV. I guess maybe if a team made a bold move and offered him something like $8-9M x 5, for a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd, then it would get a lot more interesting, and risky.
Mavrik Bourque is a much more likely offersheet candidate for a 2nd IMO. I believe DAL has only $6M in cap space, so I think that offering him $4.6M, would be a relatively low risk signing.

Pionk signed with the Jets (6x7.0AAV) so that's one step closer to the Sharks wanting Rasmus if that rumor holds water.

It would be a pretty big misstep for a team like the Flames -- which could just as easily finish bottom five as make the playoffs next year -- to offer sheet a player and give up a first round pick as compensation, which could turn out to be McKenna. I don't think fans on this site would ever forgive the team for something like that.
Columbus is the only team that I could see including a first as compensation in an offer sheet... they may feel they're one or two pieces away, and if they sign Marner, resign Fabbro, and offer sheet a high end young centre, the risks might be small enough for the step they should take.

Ekblad is their #1 target but multiple teams will be after him. On the trade front Andersson is high on their list. Sharks are not one of the 6 on the NTC.
Georgiev was told by Grier he will not be returning. Vladar is of high interest in net. Schaefer is their #1 choice as of today if they win the lottery. They want to stabilize the D.

Sharks can have Vlad. Good dude. Needs a change me thinks.
Im becoming more attached to the idea of trying to acquire Filip Bystedt

Maybe we can play nice and send them Coleman with retention for Bourque if Blake will waive?
Stars will get bounced in 4-5 the way they are playing. A solid 200 foot player to help keep the GA down, who also has experience winning cups could help them next year. And he is a local product coming home.

Yeah also count me in as a fan of the Athletic. I do find their Flames coverage to be pretty poor compared to the other teams I follow but taking them to task on a bit of idle speculation is a bit harsh, journalists in local papers have been doing that for years and some people like reading it.
All that said Flames absolutely can not offer sheet anyone for more than 4.5 mil... the 1st next year has to be completely off the table.
The flames battled hard this year and it was great, but anyone thinking they are close to having a decent team that actually contends is deluded. The core that pulled them to competitiveness is aging out, they did well to give some of the young players coming through confidence but that's all this was. Next year Kadri will be 35, Coleman 34, Backlund 36, Huberdeau 32, Weegar 31-32.
5 of your top 8 scorers are going to decline, if not immediately very shortly. Flames need to stay the course and keep rebuilding. If the value is there any of those guys except Weegar should be gone this summer, zero chance they are here when the flames get a sniff of a cup sadly.

Honestly? Here.
GDTs aggregate the good Flames coverage really well. There isn’t really much journalism needed for a clean cut team like Calgary.
$1/month is cheap but I don’t really see the value as pertains to the Flames. A Julian McKenzie answers your questions segment every now and then reads like most threads here.
Probably worth it if you love other NA sports. I’m in the minority, any sport the Flames or affiliates clubs aren’t playing is boring garbage for me. I’d rather go to the dentist than watch NBA, MLB, NFL, CFL, NCAA…

Yeah I don't subscribe for Flames coverage because I get all I need here and I don't care for McKenzie.
I consume it for more of the league wide stuff, including prospects with both Wheeler and Pronman.

They took McKenzie off which was great because he clearly did not like the Flames or covering them but the negative is now a.real lack of Flames content. I also think Pronman is terrible, I have no idea how he has a job.
