The Oilers are inherently idiotic. They don’t need a special strategy to accomplish that.

True, but they've been playing McDavid for 25+ minutes a night for most of his career. Not playing him at all would require them to show an original form of idiocy, and I'm not sure they have it in them.

Just a reminder:
Players the Oilers moved out:
......................Gms..G..A...Pts..+/-
Ryan McLeod......74 19 _30 _49 14
Warren Foegele..77 22 _21 _43 32
Dylan Holloway...77 26 _37 _63 21
Philip Broberg.....67 _8 _21 _29 21
Cody Ceci..........81 _4 _19 _23 _7
Total..............376 _79 128 207 95
Players the Oilers "upgraded" their roster with:
......................Gms..G..A...Pts..+/-
Jeff Skinner.........68 16 12 28 -1
Viktor Arvidsson...63 14 12 26 -3
Adam Henrique....77 11 12 23 -1
Ty Emberson.......72 0 10 10 -10
Troy Stecher........64 _3 _4 _7 -1
Total.................344 44 50 94 -16
So, these 5 changes, described by the Sportsnet Oilers media as a GM Masterclass, is the equivalent of losing a player scoring 35 goals, 78 assists for 113 points who was a +111. Good thing those incoming players accepted less money to play for the Oilers.

I know that +/- isn’t always a completely legitimate stat, but the sheer order of magnitude difference of -111 is meaningful.
Sure, maybe they are burdened by the Mavi/pissy jump off the ice when the puck leaves the offensive zone +/- effect, but it’s still a decent indicator of defensive performance.

You mean Norris candidate Emberson didn't work out so great? Huh.

Emberson is the poster child for how ridiculous people get with fancy stats. Here's a guy that is a replacement level player, but had some really good fancy stats last year (big woop). People looked at those numbers and concluded this guy is a diamond in the rough! No, he is a replacement level player. Most hockey stats are complete garbage at rating players.

while it has been inevitable for a while, last night it became statistically impossible for the Oilers to garner the division crown.
worth remembering that 18/20 'experts' predicted they would win the division (one vote each for the Canucks *missed playoffs* and Vegas)
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...024-25-season/
This keeps the Oilers record streak alive. They have not won a regular season division crown in Sydney Crosby's lifetime.
The last time they won Kent Nilsson and Danny Gare were Oilers, Fred Astaire was still alive and Lean on Me by Club Nouveau was the number one song in Canada

I had to look this up myself to verify because I just couldn't believe it. Wow. Since that time the Flames have won their division 8 times.

Oilers were outscored at 5 on 5 last night 2-1 vs the worst team in the league and needed their 3rd period powerplay to get the GWG (in case anyone forgot that the Oilers are no good).

How can management plausibly keep their jobs? What other organization would this be accepted? Some kinda propaganda machine they have to make people think this is close to a top hockey club.

Arrogance.
Most people would look at that and ask questions like: how did this happen? How could we have gotten this so wrong? Etc.
The Oilers braintrust will look at this and think: those guys let us down.

A few more oilers injuries last night.
They will have to sit out a couple of games.
I don’t believe any of it.
Pissy and Mavi must really need to use up their Cabo timeshare days.
