Edwards was rated 30th of 32 in owners of the NHL.
He was feeding Stampeder players corn flakes and expired milk.
Anything to save a penny for that guy, people at CNRL know. Unfortunate that one of the better fanbases has one of the worst owners on the level of the Cleavland Browns.
The NHL has a very rich revenue sharing program, so spending the cap isn't something special, its encouraged with that program. Ran away from Canada because he refuses to pay his fair share of taxes and scams the city to get a free arena.

And damn right there will be arguing, sure as gods got sandals.

The blueline was the main reason I thought this was a bottom 5 team heading in. I just couldn't imagine a world where that patchwork group could be good enough. But I don't know how much worse they would be, because Rasmus has been off for a while now (my view is he's hobbled by an injury because he's not moving right), so I don't know if the gap is that big.

Aquilini, which I agree with, and then the slam dunk worst owner is the Pegulas.

Scrooge McDuck was one of them. Terrible owner. Just rolls around in a vault of gold coins while spending under the cap.
31st was Franceso Aquilini (Vancouver) with a D+. Edwards got a C.
32nd was Terry Pegular from Buffalo. No surprise. F.

People want to point to Andersson, or Wolf, or any one piece as the difference between where we are and the absolute basement, but the system spreads out so much responsibility and there is such a a commitment to team defence that it ended up far greater than the sum of its parts, and because of that, no one player is that big of a difference maker on their own.
This isn’t a team being held together by one or two star players. It’s a generally low-skilled, hard working team where on any given night a fourth liner can have a bigger impact than the entire first line.

You cry so much if anyone has an opinion different than you. Murray Edwards is an awful, awful owner. And i also cheer for the Flames.
Both can be true, he was stating a fact.

For everyone saying “time to clean house”
We…did that already. And have a ton of picks and cap space, some great young prospects who have graduated and also in the system, and hopefully a franchise goalie.
My biggest concern is where the hell we’re going to find a first line center now that we are going to try and build the team over the next 5 years. There’s none on the roster and none in the system.

And.....they're not going to be picking top 5 anytime soon unles a total disaster or massive mismanagement occurs.

Thats the irony...teams like the Oilers tried to compete and failed so bad they drafted 1st overall 4 times.
Shrewd ownership and management though...Katz is just a great guy and owner

It’s hard to argue against the idea that Murray Edwards is the central figure behind the Calgary Flames’ 30 years of mediocrity. Over this time span, the team has seen changes in players, coaches, and management, yet one constant remains: Murray Edwards. Aside from the city itself—which has been consistently ranked as the most livable in North America and clearly isn’t to blame—Edwards stands out as the common denominator. His influence on the organization’s direction and priorities, such as the refusal to hire big name coaches or to rebuild, seems inseparable from its inability to rise above mediocrity. It's at least worth scrutinizing the Edward's role.

I don't know if that's a certainty. There is a lot of variability year over year. Wolf could have a sophmore slump or get injured. Any number of things could happen.
From 2013 to 2020 the Avs drafted:
#1
#23
#10
#10
#4
#16
#4
#25
Obviously the key is they got Mackinnon at #1, but I'm more highlighting the ups and downs of that franchise as they worked their way through a re-build.
Top 5 is not out of the question for this team next season.

Two years before Celebrini, SJ was going to pick 11th (they then traded and wound up 27th).
Two years before Bedard Chicago was picking 12th (which they traded for Jones) and the year before they were in a 6th place pick (also traded for Jones).
Dallas went from picking 16th to the next year picking third (Heiskenan) and then never picked top 10 afterwards.

At the deadline the flames were only 4 points ahead of the 10th worst team. No one here is claiming Andersson is a star, however it wouldn’t be a stretch to believe that trading a defenceman of his skill level could have been a swing of ~2 wins. Not exactly a big jump.
Also I’m only going off my eye test, but this team didn’t look particularly strong defensively. Naturalstattrick sort of backs up what I saw, flames mostly ranked middle of the pack in most high danger against categories.

I've noticed some of the same posters who say the Flames should have traded Andersson for a haul at the deadline, also say Andersson has been garbage this season and his value is decreasing every day.
That doesn't sound to me like a player who is single-handedly keeping his team nine points higher in the standings than they would be without him.
It also doesn't sound like the kind of player you could get a haul for at the deadline.

Traditionally he's been a good player, but he's having a rough year and especially rough 2nd half.
Flames had zero defenseman depth (Parekh was not available to the team until yesterday). Without Andersson, his spot would have been filled by a waiver wire pickup.

Without Andersson, his spot would probably have been filled by Solovyov. That's not a downgrade that by itself equates to nine points in the standings, especially in the short time since the trade deadline.
