It's not funny.
It's certainly possible Ovechkin supports Putin in his heart of hearts, but it is equally likely, if not moreso, that Ovechkin is Putin's hostage just like any other Russian.

It's cute that Cecil thinks Ovechkin has free will.

You can dislike politics being brought into talk about athletic accomplishments. I get it.
But this notion that Ovechkin has no choice but to actively support Putin is nonsense. The great majority of Russian athletes and celebrities steer clear of politics, and nothing bad happens to them. Speak out against him? Sure, that’s running a risk. But keeping quiet is a route open to everybody, and the one most athletes choose.
Ovechkin didn’t choose that route. He and his mother are active and enthusiastic supporters of Putin and his regime. Not out of fear, but because of what Putin can do for them.

Russia is the land of the 21% prime rate. Putin is none too bright.
"Ovechkin, you are best Russian player, you must support me!"

If I remember correctly, Panarin also kinda fled the country and is never planning to return there. Ovechkin still has family there

As someone with Ukranian heritage...I'm not exactly happy that Ovechkin broke this record. I can understand that there are reasons been silent on the issue of Putin invading Ukraine. I hope one day he'll be able to condemn Putin's action here. If he can speak freely and doesn't...well hate to spew there will be.
That said he's earned the record and if not for a full season lockout , Covid, and another half season he'd have blown it up 2 years ago. So I don't care for the person today, but respect the talent.

I’ve made up a conspiracy theory in my head that once he took this title he’d use it and the associated popularity to overthrow Putins government himself. A man can dream.

I'm not supporting/condoning Ovechkin's support of Putin, but no-one here knows the actual circumstances around his relationship with Putin. It's easy for us to say "oh Panarin disavowed Putin, Ovi should do it too!" but none of us knows what the reality actually is here and whether or not Ovi is supporting Putin because he actually believes it or because Putin has the power to decide whether or not Ovi's family back in Russia lives a wonderful life or a horrifying one.
Possible that Ovi actually loves Putin and supports him of his own free will and possible that he does it because he has to for his family's best interests and safety.

Unless Putin was friends with a teenage hockey player who was, at that time, just another in a long line of talented Russian forwards, he chose Ovechkin.
Imagine Vladimir Putin calls you on the phone, or has you out to his dacha where he could easily have you found facedown in a swimming pool.
"You're going to say nice things about me, and so is your mom."
That request only ends with a "Yes Sir".

They fabricated allegations that Panarin assaulted a woman in 2011.
Other than that, zero consequences.

Panarin had to take a leave from the Rangers to get some family stuff sorted out a couple yesrs back. It was kept pretty quiet as the nature of it was quite sensitive. I don't think he spoke out against this like Zadorov has. But I don't think he actively supports him either. See above...he's been critical in the past..so he had reason to fear for family still over there.

Turns out you were speaking for your self and old man JayRandom on this one, even though you were probably expecting a huge bevy of thanks for that post, haha.

This is wonderfully summed up and aligns with how I feel. I respect his hockey skill in breaking this record. I do not respect the human being at all. Incredible hockey player, that is all I'll give him and all he deserves. Congrats. There are thousands of lives being ended and families being destroyed by a psychopath that Ovechkin and his mother have not just silently agreed with but actively support at every turn. **** that, politics in sports suck, yes, no one wants that. But sometimes your evil views are bigger than a game. Sorry to ruin the mood.
Feel free to wreck this post with dismissive sarcasm and annoyed "let us enjoy sports!!!!!" posts and justify how you feel to enjoy this more, that's fine, I've said my piece, we're all free to do so. Don't worry about it if you hate it, just enjoy the moment.

Ovi's alleged politics bothers me a lot less than anyone who supports Trump or Danielle Smith

The first part of Ovi's career was nowhere near as explosive as Wayne's, despite Ovi still being very explosive with multiple 50+ goal seasons and a 65 goal season. It was Ovi's ability to stay productive after 35 years of age that allowed him to have a chance at the record.
There will be many players that have explosive starts to their careers, but none have carried that production this late into their careers. Remember how steep Iggy's drop off was, despite being dominate in his prime?
For that reason, I think no current players will have a sniff at the record, and I'm doubtful in the future anyone stays as durable and productive as Ovi. It wouldn't surprise me if he had a 40 goal season next year at age 40.

Not sure where I saw it originally, if it was on CP then apologies for the redundant post.
Should the Rocket Richard trophy be renamed for Ovechkin? Richard won the goal scoring race 5 times in his career, Ovi had done it nine times. He's arguably the greatest goal scorer to ever play the game.
