Short: your risk for getting screwed on these shares is low. Long run can be relatively valueless or holy #### they're valuable.
Longer:
Many companies scaling up need as much cash as possible.
To save cash, they sometimes give you a part of the company instead of equal or greater payment value in shares vs them paying you cash and paying debt servicing costs or control to a potential takeover group to borrow more.
Different classes of shares means the ability to compensate certain groups of people properly vs other groups of people (ie: founders vs high level employees vs low level employees; and dilution). Sometimes it's trading money for control.
Private shares situations like this may ultimately end up with severely inaccurate cost of shares on an investment statement. To avoid significantly overpaying tax, you have to make sure you have the right paperwork to prove and calculate the correct cost of the shares.

Can a company just evaporate vacation days? I had two weeks for 2024 remaining and they just are gone now in my ADP. They do not let you carry over more than five, but do they not have to payout the one week or both? Can't just eliminate them I didn't think. I just want to know if that's true before I ask about it.

I think it depends on your company’s policies. Ours doesn’t allow more than 5 either unless we request it for some exceptional reason. We also wouldn’t get paid out for any unused though.

The law in AB is they need to offer 4% of your salary worth in vacation payment.
I am not sure about removing days after they are given to you, but if they don't give you that 4% it's illegal.

That's our policy but I didn't think it was allowed to just take them and delete them.

Probably the nice thing to do is for HR to send out a reminder, but I think it’s basically a use it or lose it situation unless the company is preventing you from taking time off.

From a Calgary law firm:
Can You “lose” Vacation Days?
The law requires that employers give you your vacation within 12 months of you becoming entitled to it. This means that employers do not have to let you bank up holidays year over year and can instead adopt a “use-it-or-lose-it” policy. However, even if an employee “loses” their vacation days because they have not been used by the end of the year, employers still must pay their employees for the vacation time.
https://getzcollins.com/can-my-emplo...ke-a-vacation/
A nice guide, but it does not answer the specific question.
https://www.alberta.ca/vacation-pay
Also, if employed over 5 years it is 6% not 4%. The guide talks how to calculate that.

My company is the same. Use it or lose it if it's more than 5 days, and they don't pay us out if not used.

So that's technically illegal?

I feel like there might be a differentiation between salaried and hourly employees about how this works, and also if you were prevented from your employer from taking the vacation time off.

When the company I worked for was bought the new boss gave us one year to use our accumulated holidays, any left would then disappear. I had 41 days to burn; took every Monday and Friday off all summer.

I’m not sure where to ask this. Any idea how prevalent it is that people are being refused access to the US? I’m slated to go down for a conference in a couple weeks and already not wanting to (general boycott). But seeing these advisories makes me wonder if that’s hyperbole or another reason for me to back out.

Aside from the few sensational stories that hit the media recently it seems like business as usual. I know of a few dozen people who have traveled over the last three weeks for vacation (family and co-workers) or conferences (the Microsoft Fabric conference in Vegas this last week) and no one had any issues.

I had zero trouble when I went to Vegas. However, there is the media sensationalism but I think it should be noted, of that, ironically, most is directed to the US not letting you leave.

There was great info about baseball gloves earlier…now a question about bats. The 5 year old has decided that practicing underhand pitches to him while he hits is his new favorite thing ever. He decided not to play t-ball this year, but might next year. Any advice on the best place to get a bat for him and what I should be looking for? Since he’s having so much fun with the underhand pitching should I just bypass t-ball bats for now? We stopped at play it again sports, but their used bat section was very sparse.

I was in the USA last week and going back on Friday. Wouldn’t even know anything is happening.

Decathlon has a few bats at great prices. I'd get a t-ball size, they have this one for $40. Aluminum, tball size, that's all you need imo.

Comes in pink also.

Honestly, Decathlon is pretty much my go to for kids sports equipment. Cheap enough that you're not breaking the bank, but still decent quality for kids starting out and trying new sports.

Definitely. If they get serious and you want to upgrade later great, but for kids who want to try 11 different things over a 5 year period it's definitely the way to go. I've been pretty satisfied with the quality of their house brand items as well - they're not top tier, but my kdis have grown out of stuff before it wears out for sure.

Are you in SE Calgary? I am pretty sure I have what you need and I will give it to you. Otherwise, the advice above is solid. The biggest issue is don't get one too big or heavy. As long as he can swing it 'fast' meaning without any lag to get the swing started you are good to go. He will outgrow this bat by next year so basic is the way to go. Walmart/CT may have a good starter one as well.
