I have said I like Marner as a player...I don't think he is coming here, I think the Flames will talk to him if he gets to UFA.
The Flames are going to try improve their team on paper this summer, not make it worse to tank. Its what is going to happen.

lol I’ll stop the bickering after this to stop clogging it up but you are continuing to miss the first part of the sentence. A story/report. Marner has not been rumoured to have interest in the Flames or connected in any way. There has been speculation on fan sites that the Flames will try and sign him. Hope that helps

I didn’t say 3. But for sure we get lit up and our PK was pretty bad up until now. Going for 15th in goals against to 20-25 would sink us.

I don't think he is personally responsible for stopping 3 goals per game but I do think that this D group can only handle so many downgrades before it seriously impacts the total result on the ice.
In the last couple of seasons the D group went from
- Hanifin, Andersson, Weegar, Tanev, Zadorov, Stone, Gilbert
To
- Andersson, Weegar, Bahl, Hanley, Pachal, Mironmanov, Bean
One could argue that we went from having 5 "top 4" quality D to 2 "top 4" quality D but our much more defensively structured team system is trying to close the gap.
If next year the list becomes "Weegar, Bahl, Pachal, Bean, Mironmanov, Parekh, Solovyov" then I believe that we would easily see our goals against climb by the "3 goals". But Andersson is really just the last straw of a larger transition.

Its not Marner or bust...some are missing the entire point. Conroy will try and improve the team not try and tank it. They wont just downgrade the D and sit on 25M in cap. If #4 is traded other D are coming in...they are either way

I'd be happy if they traded Rasmus and brought in a shorter term replacement in UFA. That's smart asset management to me.
If they keep Rasmus then go out and sign Bennett and Pionk, that will be terrible.

Who are the top UFA dmen this summer?
I like Rasmus but I'm wary of anything long term with him. If the term is 6+ years then I might prefer trading him for good futures and going after a 2-4 year vet commitment instead.
Parekh, Brz and Mews are going to take care of our offense from the blueline in the years to come. And Rasmus isn't exactly a defensive stalwart. So its hard to see justification for a huge contract given that Weegars already here long term.

Flames have not discussed anything about acquiring Marner to this point.
I do feel like Rasmus and Calgary have drifted apart a bit from what I've heard, he's going to want more to stay in Calgary.

I mean that would be tampering for one thing...IF he makes it to UFA I bet they talk to his representatives.

Hard to imagine they wouldn't make a pitch.
Flames can offer Marner what he's looking for. A handful of other teams can too, but it does narrow the playing field if he's intent on getting market value.
Depends on what he thinks of Calgary vs the other clubs with the cap to burn on a contract for him.
Hopefully the Flames sneak in and give him something to think about as to the direction of the team.

Discussing internally is not tampering.

With all due respect I don't think any CPer would qualify as internal discussions.
They would be careful, he might not even get to UFA. I'm certain they have discussed having some of the most space in the league and being able to shoot their shot at the very top free agents if it comes to that and makes sense. Nobody is naming names right now, maybe Conroy would tell Iggy on the golfcourse.

I really think the only thing Conroy can do to bring Marner in is overpay. We have seen in the past how that is what it usually takes for the flames to get players in free agency. I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure that’s how they got Kadri, Coleman, Markstrom, Neal and Brouwer. While I’m sure all of them needed to like Calgary to sign… in the end, the flames paid them a little more and/or gave them the extra year or two in their contract that others would not.
That’s what I think it would take for Calgary to get Marner. The flames have the cap space to over-pay for him. In that sense, I could see them being in the mix. Conroy could pay him $15 million. The list of teams willing or capable of paying Marner that much is probably pretty small. Not saying that’s what Calgary should do. Just that they could if they really wanted to.

I think Marner would take less to go to a US team.

15M for a winger who is invisible in the playoffs is nuts. Especially when a guy like Rantanen got 12M and is over a PPG in the playoffs.
I think he ends up staying in Toronto anyways.

Rantanen didn't get to UFA though...he could have gotten more money per but one year less term. Not to say that 15M is realistic, Marner could probably get 14 if money is all he is after.

50 points in 56 games is invisible?
Primary assists on the game tying and winning goals in the nations championship game is invisible?
I see.

He is being paid to play in the NHL his performance in an exhibition series doesn’t matter.
Compared to Rantanen the other big name winger who would have been available year 50/58 isn’t worth 15M. He should take less than Rantanen but I understand he will get more as he will have a bidding war.

but he's not, maybe Marner isn't either, maybe he has other priorities. But if Marner wants 14Mx7 he can get it IMO

I do not love playing the age card... but Burns is 40. Ekblad has his new drama that may taint his UFA signing a bit.
This year has the following guys who are doing pretty good and are under 33:
- Ekblad (29), Pionk (29), Provorov (28), Grzelcyk (31), Gavrikov (29), Orlov (33), Burns (40)
Next year has a smaller group as many of the top UFAs are currently 34-35, which means they will be 35-36 or possibly 37 at the start of the 2026-7 season.
- Carlson (35), Raddysh (29), Ekholm (34), Walman (29), Andersson (29), Matheson (31), McDonagh (35)
When you look at the ages and stats for the respective players... Andersson is one of the top players in either group but definitely in the second group.
