Without the lockouts, does Ovechkin eclipse 1000 goals?

Go Ovi Go!

This guy is an absolute machine and he's not taking 'No' for an answer. He has scored 40 at 39 and still has a year under contract and is playing for one of the best teams in the League?

He's not going to break this record. He's going to make it his bitch.

I like that this was seriously in question 1-2 years ago.

Some thought it would take an extension beyond his current contract to have a shot at it.

Then a month ago the expectation was next season because of the time lost to injury.

So much for that.

Dude. Realistically? I think the VAST majority of people thought this record, with the change in rules, style and improvement of defenders, players and goaltending was nigh on untouchable EVER.

This is a miracle. This is hockey history.

And we're watching it unfold. Live.

Also, if he had been born 2 days earlier, he could have had another 82 games in 2003-04.

He set another record tonight too: https://bsky.app/profile/tsnofficial.../3lm22f6vccs2f

He had the GWG in the game, which was the 136th of his career, putting him one ahead of Jagr's 135.

It is truly amazing what he has done. At his age to score 40 goals in a season, wow.

Everyone is comparing this run to Gretzky. But let’s not forget about the remarkable longevity of Gordie Howe.

Howe scored 39 goals at age 39. And that wasn’t an era with inflated scoring - Bobby Hull won the goal-scoring race in 67-68 with 44 goals on the season, only 5 more than Howe.

Finishing 5 goals back of the league leader at age 39 is pretty remarkable. For context, Ovechkin is 11 back of Draisatl.

He’s 11 back playing 60 games vs Draisaitls 71 games. 41 goals in 60 games is 0.68 goals per game or 7.5 goals in those 11 games so we are talking 3-4 goals off the goal leading pace.
Also, Howe played 3 more games than Hull in 67/68.
Both are remarkable seasons.

Howe scored 39 against small goalies playing standup and opposition defenders who smoked cigarettes and drank beer during the intermissions.

Ovie, who is also 39, is playing against highly-trained athletes and 6'5" goalies who cover 95% of the net just by being in front of it.

Edit: Ovechkin has been the #1 all-time goal scorer for quite a while already, when using era-adjusted goal totals.

Pretty incredible for a 39-year old scoring 41 goals and counting. I wouldn't be surprised if Ovi goes on to get his second Cup this year. The guy's a beast and definitely deserves a lot of respect!

Gordie Howe is the only player in history to score over 40 goals well past his prime at the age of 40 (44 goals). Maybe Ovi will do another 40+ goal next season!

Imagine the NHL goal record if Howe had wrist surgery instead of retiring for two years, then getting his wrist fixed then playing in the WHA for six years. Guy came back to the NHL at 51 years old and popped 15 more.

I do wonder if Ovechkin can play for another 5 years. The speed isn't there but that doesn't doesn't go and as long as he can stay physical and recover I think we'll see him well into his 40s

How many fewer goals does Ovechkin get this season if he’s using the sticks Howe used? How many more would Howe have scored if he had access to modern training methods and resources?

The most fair way to assess athletes is by the standards of their own eras. In that light, Ovechkin’s feat of remaining an elite, near-top-of-the-league goal scorer at age 39 has at least one precedent.

or Mario, who had 5 entire seasons missed due to injury/sickness or lockout, and another 5 seasons in which he played 24 games or less.
