I'm not really surprised the career goal scoring record will be beat, Gretzky was always more of a passer than a shooter.
I think Gretzky will hold the most goals in a season and the quickest to 50 for a while though.

I’ve said for years that Gretz is a fake Canadian loser who hasn’t lived here in decades and has all but abandoned Canada.
It really warms my heart to see everyone else getting on board.
I wear #8 in beer league hockey and it goes back to when I was a kid. I started wearing #8 in 2006 when Ovi was a rookie and I was 12. So cool to see what he’s done. I can’t wait for him to break the record, hopefully on Sunday!

I long for the day when the leading scorer doesn't have any kind of relationship or allegiance with a scummy political leader but for now I'll take Ovie over the ex-oiler and Trump groupie.
Any time a record is taken from a forner Oiler, an angel smiles gleefully.

I mean … it depends on whether you give Wayne any credit for his 1963 assists which is, you know, over 1200 more than Ovechkin
Ovechkin shoots, rarely passes. So with a primary focus on shooting, he caught the guy whose first priority was passing
If you’re correcting for era, why not consider play style
Either way, very impressive by Ovechkin. I don’t think many people expected that record to fall
