Yeah, those guys weren't going to let Crosby slack on his duties. When he came into the league, he was like pretty much every other young offensive phenom, but he quickly learned that he needed to play a complete game to get the ice time and the respect of veterans. I recall hearing stories about Recchi in particular holding him accountable. If he screwed up, those guys let him know. And to Crosby's credit, he embraced it.
Does, or has any player ever held McDavid accountable for anything he does wrong?

Arguably we tried that back in the day with Brouwer and it was a bust. Not saying one example is definitive proof, but I suspect locker rooms are all unique so you can't just bring in someone and say 'hey guys he's the new Coleman'
|
We tried that with Lomberg and it worked out pretty well, albeit that was a unique scenario as he used to be with the org. But it does align with the philosophy Conroy's been preaching about bringing in guys who want to be here.
For clarity I'm not suggesting we completely strip down the roster of all veteran players but if you're moving on from someone like Coleman or Raz I think that's just sensible asset management for the future.

Having McDavid and accountable beside each other in any sentence is absolutely hilarious. He came into the league with a poor attitude and has never throughout his hockey career exhibited true leadership skills. Edmonton completely dropped the ball and didn't have, or give authority to, any proven veterans to keep him accountable and teach him the proper way to play the game and lead.

C'mon, this is absolutely unhinged. There's no one on our roster even close to crosby. That's why it doesn't make sense to hold on to vets- we have no one that can reasonably take up the "mantle" (even if you believe that's a real thing that matters.)

The Flames are actually pretty close to the cap floor at this point. The cap is expected to rise about $10 million/year in 26-27 and 2027/28. They'll give Zary, Bahl, Frost, and Coronato raises this off season, but Mantha at $3.5 is coming off the books.
They can't really move all the vets without paying for other vets, especially if Andersson is being moved. I guess they could take on bad contracts? I don't really see the owners doing that. They are hesitant to retain cap, let alone pay millions for players they know will be bad.

The fact there haven’t been many 18 year olds playing in the NHL should tell you something.
And Bedard basically did it on his own.

Pens gave the keys to Crosby (and Malkin, Letang, and Fleury) after only a single season with Mario (barely) and Gonchar. It resulted in one of the best decades in their franchise history.
|
I think the Sid/Mario relationship proves the leadership point - he lived with Mario for the first 5years of his career. I don't think that had an insignificant effect on his career and leadership style.
Further to that, Pens management made sure there was always some combination of Reechi, Leclaire, Roberts and Guerin on the team in those first 3-5years of that young core being together.
Character/leadership is only one aspect of a giant puzzle, but given the way this team has publicly stated how they want certain types of players here, signals to me how much they value guys like Coleman.
It's fine, we can agree to disagree - I put a higher emphasis on intangibles and character.

Counterpoint: that's why it does make sense to keep some vets around.
Also, instead of calling people unhinged, try to understand the point they're making. I am sure if you try, you can figure out that I wasn't suggesting Coronato might become Crosby.

Pat Steinberg has made a point of mentioning Bennett multiple times now. Hard to see how we can "outbid" Florida unless we offer something crazy like 8 x 8. I'd love bennett back but can't see how without a huge overpay

The Flames are a mentorship program? The young players on the team will have to take the reigns when the other group comes up.
You don't hold on to vets just so they can mentor guys.
You can add players like that. You can't find skill easily.
You know what type of culture is important? Winning.

So the great thing for us is that Murray Edwards is an amazing owner.
If the Buffalo and Edmonton rebuilds were so disastrous because of ownership issues than the most important part of our rebuild not following suit is that our owner is top notch.
If Edwards is anything other than a top ten owner in the league than the chances are that any complete tear down to the bare studs multiple season tanking and instilling a culture of losing will be short lived because of the stability and culture provided by ownership down through the organization.

I don't understand how he would want to sign here, struggled with every coach here, his career took off once he left but comes back to the team that he struggled on, colder weather, more taxes and to a mediocre franchise-he has won a cup now so i think that matters. What am i missing here?

Huberdeau won’t be going anywhere and I highly doubt Kadri is.

You move out veterans when you have younger players that are ready to backfill those positions or you are not willing to pay them more than they are worth to the organization on and off the ice.
Andersson should get traded at the draft based on the assumption that he is going to be looking for more than $7M/year salary.
Coleman should be traded if you believe that we have six other wingers that should be playing top nine roles and his salary is too much to be playing on the fourth line. I think that is the case with the group of young players and Huberdeau that the Flames have right now on the team and that should be ready to take the next step who are on the Wranglers.

Signing Bennett would make turn on Conroy pretty hard. He is going to get massively overpaid imo. Less Kadri and more Lucic

Not saying I agree with Pat, but guys like Coleman, Backlund, Kadri, etc have talked very highly about how good of a place Calgary is to live and raise a family in. Maybe Bennett feels like he wants to start raising a family, and not in the states...

Steinberg seems like he keeps throwing #### to the wall and hoping it sticks.
I can't see any significant free agent signing here unless its a big overpay.

I just don't see the fit. Bennett is a player that a playoff team should consider to get over the top, not a player to help a fringe team squeak into the playoffs.

Have to wonder if the Leafs can find a way to replace the salaries of Marner and Tavares with Bennett and Ekblad.
