Can you explain this to me a little more?

I'm a Flames fan in Vancouver, and sometimes I travel for work out East. I don't understand why the Flames game is blacked out when I'm sitting in a hotel in Toronto or Ottawa. I believe the Flames were playing American teams those times.

Games are designated as either "regional" or "national".

If national, games will be available across Canada without blackouts.

If regional, games will only be available in the Calgary Flames region - which is Alberta, Saskatchewan, NWT(?) only. Someone else can confirm the exact Flames region.

It's not dependent on the teams that they are playing.

As of late, past few years, more and more of the games have been designated as national.

You are correct. The Flames region includes Nunavut and the Northwest Territories.

I can already see the Alberta teams, so that doesn't help at all.

As for the rest of the league I can watch any game between SJS and MIN or BOS or NJD, but if I want to watch a Cdn team? Nope (other than EDM of course). That's the point - blackouts of all other Cdn teams, forcing me to watch the American teams

Surprised the NHL didn't try to get more by doing more of a split package and selling off specific rights or nights.

But guess they could have tried to get Rogers to overpay for exclusivity.

They spread the rights across different networks in the US but give us this ####.

Leave it to the NHL to stay in the stone ages. A useless regular season, no streaming, gunning for 36 teams.

Then you need to buy the Center Ice(or GameCenter or whatever it's called these days) package if you wanna watch the out of market games. As a Flames fan in BC, I've had the package for the better part of 20 years now.

Yeah, the rule sucks, but it's been like this forever. Guess I'm just used to it.

But CenterIce blacks out Canadian games as well, does it not?

I had it for a while, to get Flames games in the US, but gave up on it doe to the blackouts

CI blackout only the games available in your region. Live in Calgary, you can watch the Habs or Sens on CI

I found when I had it with Shaw Direct it would show Habs games on the CI channel but also unlock TSN2 for the game also.

11 billion dollars.

And municipalities are putting significant tax payer dollars toward these buildings.

There needs to be a model where the municipality shares in this revenue or something.

The owners pocketed and split 2.7B in expansion fees since 2017. Yet can’t pay for arenas.

This sucks but they could salvage it somewhat if they got Rick Ball back calling Flames' games.

My guess Amazon gets a bigger chunk and maybe they also split games off to other partners as well.

But that's a big number and not sure who Rogers was competing against to double the $ of the current deal...as I assume they had the first right to negotiate.

Could this be the end of TSN at least as we know it now, in the next 5 years? They have some basketball and the CFL. Sure Euro soccer, WC and Olympics. NFL I guess as well.

But Bell isn't really lighting it up on the financial statements and divested out of MLSE.

Will see even a bigger cap jump for sure now by the time the new rink opens.

There were rumors a little while ago about Bell wanting to sell TSN

Edit - removed pay wall link but Google it, rumor surfaced last December

I subscribe to the Sportsnet premium streaming option and get all NHL games, no blackouts. Prime is by far a better production and video quality, but other than them, who else is going to dish out that type of coin in Canada to hold the rights?

That doesn't make sense.

If it's a national broadcast, you should be able to watch it on whichever SN channel is showing it, and if it's a regional game, you should be able to watch it using the same out-of-market service you watch the US games on.

The only time it could be a problem would be if a game was airing nationally on a Sportsnet channel you don't subscribe to. I know this was a problem when Sportsnet One first launched because the basic cable package didn't include SN1, so a lot of people couldn't watch games that were on SN1. This can also be a problem in hotels, which often have a limited channel selection.
